Knight, 2013-2014 President Beaumont Community Chamber of Commerce ; Hayward Tilton Rolapp Insurance; 1-760-404-1530m xt. 1532, robink@htrinsure.com The Chamber's first successful Lunch and Learn Series was held last month at the Beaumont Civic Center. This event was very well attended and for those who may have missed it, I wanted to give you an update of some of the subject matter covered at this very informative luncheon. From hiring to firing, we discussed how important day to day employment practices are in your business. As a business owner with employees, do you have an employee handbook in place? Are you current and up to date on the Family Medical Leave Laws? What about Wage and Hour Law disputes? What can be done to protect your business from being sued for wrongful termination, sexual misconduct or discrimination? The sad truth of it is that employment practices liability claims are on the rise; it is estimated that as many as three out of five firms will be sued today by an employee. This can have devastating effects to you and your firm, especially when you consider that it may cost you as much as $50,000 or more to defend a fraudulent or frivolous lawsuit. This doesn't even take into account what it will cost you in your time away from your business. It can happen to you and your company any time, and any day. But, as we discussed in the seminar, there are things you can do as an employer to minimize your risk and exposure. Employment Practices Liability Insurance is available through most insurance brokers and can cost as little as $300 per month. This will pay for costly defense costs in the event of a lawsuit. In addition, HR4 is a new software application that gives you invaluable employment information at your fingertips. This software is now available to you for as little as $19.95 per month. And for just $270 per year you will have full access to HR support professionals and assistance with the development of your own personalized employee handbook. I hope that you were able to benefit from our first "Lunch and Learn" and look forward to your feedback.
