By Sherrie Chaparro, Resident Karla is our new Administrative Assistant, reporting directly to our General Manager, Anna Machado. Her duties primarily consist of attending all meetings relating directly to the Board of Directors and preparing formal minutes, working with vendors to get proposals for community projects, and generally assisting Anna in whatever is needed. She also occasionally walks the community to familiarize herself with the property and to spot any potential maintenance issues. Karla was raised in Orange County (Fullerton), and attended Cypress College. She worked in a number of fields before finding her niche in property management: The food industry (Pizza Hut, where she met her husband, and In-N-Out), retail (Mervyn's), and insurance (Allstate). She started with the mortgage industry when it was booming and joined a young, dynamic company where she received her training. Tragically, the company's young president was killed in a car accident returning home from their grand opening party and the heart went out of that business, but Karla did go on to work for Dana Capital as a loan officer and later an account executive. After the mortgage industry crashed, she and her husband were invited to a party at Canyon Lake. They fell in love with the area and moved almost immediately. She then started working in the property management field. After a few years she took a job in marketing for a vendor serving the industry, during which time she visited our community. She then returned directly to property management as an assistant community manager, but when she saw the job available here, she remembered her visit and immediately applied for the job. Working from home during this unique period in our nation's history is a challenge, but the job demands have not lessened and Karla stays very busy. Her husband continues to work for Lowe's. Each evening, he comes home, strips to his underwear in the garage, then immediately showers. Their two sons Michael and Nathan (13 and 10, respectively) are at home all day with Karla. Slotted between her job duties, she supervises their home schooling through curriculum provided online by the school district. After work is through, she tries to keep them active and engaged without resorting to electronic media by taking them on runs, working in the garden and teaching them basic cooking and housecleaning skills. In other words, she is raising excellent husband material. Their family life used to revolve around the children's sports activities (football and martial arts), but Karla now finds they rely a lot on Netflix. She screens documentaries and finds many for the children to watch, while she and her husband are binging on Mad Men. I envy her for never having seen it before, because it strikes me as a perfect thing to be watching during this time. When this is all over and Karla returns to the office, don't be surprised if she is drinking a Coke and she and Mad Men's Don Draper want to teach us all to sing.
