Patient volumes increased in almost every service category compared to the previous year. Surgeries performed increased by 10 percent, ER visits rose by six percent, and inpatient admissions inched up on percent. These increases in patient volume allowed us to collect 3.5 percent more in revenue than the prior year, even though government cuts in Medicare and Medi-Cal funding declined by almost 10 percent! We did benefit from some short term governmental funding programs related to implementing electronic medical record systems and caring for uninsured and Medi-Cal patients. The increase in patients is largely due to new doctors recruited into our Pass area by Beaver Medical Group and Loma Linda University Health. Through our common management company, EPIC Management, we added physician specialists in orthopedics, general surgery, urology, and Obstetrics/ Gynecology that see patients in the Beaver Medical Group offices and use San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital for hospital inpatient and outpatient services. These doctors not only see more patients locally, but they also bring new and added medical services so residents can more often stay local for their healthcare needs. Look for more physicians to be added this year. Of course, I would be remiss in not mentioning the impact of opening our new Emergency Department/Intensive Care Unit building on patient volumes. The new building more than doubles the number of ER and ICU beds, and since opening in May 2013 our ER volumes have increased 8 percent and the number of admissions from the ER increased 30 percent! As the saying goes, "build it and they will come" perhaps has more truth to it than we realized. We have more growth ahead of us as more and more people move into our Pass area. We have incorporated that population growth into our future building plans. Currently we are seeking funding to complete the construction of our last major patient care building, a 6-story structure that will provide us 120 private patient rooms, four major surgical suites, and state of the art imaging equipment and technology. Once this building is open we will have all of the space and technology we need to serve our population for the next 40 years. Look for more news on this last major project as we head through 2014! San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital Safe Care * Quality Care * Our Care San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital Continues to Grow
