That's the little diddy I came up with when looking for a little stray terrier/ corgi's owner. About a month ago, I had gone to pick Ben up from school and pull up to find him sitting on the corner holding a puppy. I rolled down the window and said, "Ummmm no." "But he doesn't have a home," Ben argued. "Yes he does. Besides, your dad would say absolutely not." "I can't just leave him here, on a busy corner, with cars whizzing around." "Fine!" We went home and I took a picture and made 50 signs. The dog, not yet named, bounced around in the backyard much to the annoyance of our grumpy old lady dog Rosie. The puppy took all of Rosie's toys and was throwing them over his head and the running after them while Rosie gave me a "what the hell" look. We took the dog and the signs back to where we found him. I taped signs to every solid object within three blocks of that corner while Ben went door to door with the dog, asking if anyone recognized it. As we walked together, we began a very dangerous talk. "He looks like a Kirby to me," Ben offered. "No, we're not naming it." "Here Kirby," Ben called. The dog didn't blink. I was silent. Ben offered a few more names. Rascal, Jefferson, Gizmo. Finally I couldn't stand it. "His name is Doug." The dog turned around. "See?" "Huh!" Ben said. That's when I came up with Doug's theme song. We sang it as we walked from house to house. In my heart I knew it was over for me. Naming a dog is bad enough, coming up with a theme song for it… That's love. Over the next week, my desire to have someone claim him waned. I told my husband that if he let us keep Doug it could be my Valentine's AND birthday presents. I know a way to a man's heart is through his wallet. Ben said that he would take care of Doug - feed him, walk him, pick up after him. I didn't even listen. I knew Doug was going to be with me most of the time and it was me who had to like him. And I did. A lot. So now we have a new Doug. He's all puppy, which means shoes are being moved from bedrooms to the backyard without notice. And he's also a kleptomaniac. He's broken into our neighbor's house and returned with their dogs' toys. Lucky for my neighbor has a sense of humor. Rosie is still not completely sold. I'm trying to think of a way to make it up to her. Maybe she needs a theme song of her own… Doug ownership MusiC To MY eArs
