| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2018 | 33 Yiddish Culture Club Have you noticed that as we gain in experience, meaning years, the good old summer time brings more nostalgia which gets better and better in our memories? Either we have forgotten about the hot, humid days and nights of summer on the East Coast, South, or Mid West, or we are native Westerners who didn't have to put up with the humidity of cities like Chicago, Atlanta, or Philly. None of the people I knew had air conditioning when I was younger. We had electric fans at home that helped a bit and some restaurants had air conditioning if you could afford to eat out. All movie theaters had air conditioning and were cheap for kids, but because of the Polio epidemic most mothers wouldn't let their kids attend. But there were some places you could go, in my neighborhood, to cool off - Jackson Park or 75th St. Beach. Not as large as Rockaway beach but it did have a stand where you could get a chocolate phosphate (Chicago) or an egg cream (New York) or even a soft drink and it came complete with the Good Humor Man on his bicycle cart filled with ice cream. It was also the gathering place for families on a hot summer night who swam in Lake Michigan, barbecued at the beach, or played cards in the park. There was always music and singing to go with hamburgers, Kosher hot dogs, coleslaw and baked beans. So, with fond memories of those early days of summertime with friends and food the Yiddish Culture Club will hold our annual Bar B Que on the hot night of July 11 at 6 pm in the air conditioned South Clubhouse. Our menu, by Thomas Catering, includes BBQ chicken, BBQ baby back ribs, baked beans, corn on the cob, coleslaw, potato salad, lemonade, apple pie and whipped cream at a price of $17 for members and $20 for guests. Jamestown ( the Dynamic Duo of Sheila and Larry James) will entertain us and there will be members in a Sing- a-long Americana. Paid reservations must be sent to Judy Weinberg at 5552 Breckinridge Ave., 768-4987 and received by July 5. You may BYOW, etc.. For more info contact Diane Stone at 769-0130 Please also remember that it is the time of year to send Pat Corrall your $15 membership fee. We hope to greet you all as members at our Americana celebration! Paisano Club June was an amazing month with Charity Week activities. What a great place to live. Congratulations to all that worked so hard to make it a great success! On Fri., June 1, we enjoyed a lovely evening celebrating an Asian theme complete with Asian food, decorations and entertainment. In celebration of the Fourth of July, on July 6 we will have a wonderful country dinner of ribs, sausage and all the trimmings. Entertainment will be provided by the band Shadow Down. Fun for all! We are thrilled to have Sheila and Larry James for entertainment on Fri., Aug 3. They are a wonderful duet from Sun Lakes. Just picture yourself in your Hawaiian attire dining at a Hawaiian Luau, and dancing to this romantic couple. Checks can be mailed or dropped off at 610 Torrey Pines Road (box by front door) or given to Carol Choisnet at the event for the next month's dinner or your dues. Please get your checks in early as we fill up fast, we can only seat 105. We meet on the first Friday of every month. Guests from Sun Lakes can come one time for $20, then if they decide to join they must pay the membership fee of $20 and $16 dinner fee. If you want to bring a guest that isn't a resident of Sun Lakes, the fee is $20. If you have to cancel, you must do so by the Friday prior to the Friday of the event to be reimbursed.
