50 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2018 |
"The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart
with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the
soul." ~ Alfred Austin
You knew it was going to happen, you blink and summer is winding
down, it's already August. I know, I know we do have a month left, but
isn't it hard to keep the summer momentum going when the stores
are putting out Halloween candy and plastic pumpkins when you are
looking for watermelon?
Meanwhile on the garden front… did you know there are late
summer things that you can plant in your garden and still attain
great results? Here are six of the best vegetables: 1. Carrots, you will
actually have carrots in your garden in approximately six weeks; 2.
Cauliflower, it is a delicious cool weather vegetable, but good at a BBQ
too, particularly if you roast it; 3. Broccoli; 4. Spinach; 5. Radishes;
6. Beets and Beet greens.
For those of you who are flower gardeners, try Poppies (the
California state flower), Cornflowers, Calendulas and Larkspur.
For our programs we enjoyed in June Linda Vieira as our guest
speaker, speaking about Gardens of the Deep, enlightening us about
the Oceans and the many new and innovative ways they are turning
fisherman into farmers. In July the guest speaker was Woody
Catalano, a resident expert who spoke about Dealing with Unwanted
Wildlife in Sun Lakes, it was both informative and educational.
Now that you've heard about the past months' summer fun, you
really don't want to miss our August meeting! Our guest speaker will
be from the Graber Olive House. The Graber Olive House is located
in Ontario, California and is the oldest operating olive packer in the
United States. In 1894, two years after planting olive trees in Ontario,
C.C. Graber began selling vat cured olives.
The Garden Club meeting is held on the second Wednesday of the
month, at the Main Clubhouse in the Ballroom, at 10 am. If you aren't
already a member, what are you waiting for? Come and try us out
as our guest! If you would like to become a member, please contact
Suzie Messick at 769-7945. Happy gardening!
