22 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2018 | Library Advisory Committee Thank you to everyone who stopped by the book sale on July Fourth! We enjoy talking with you and getting new ideas for the libraries. Thank you for all your donations – our goal is to provide the most fun and most useful libraries for Sun Lakes residents! For new residents, let's review the "whys" and "wherefores" of the various libraries. Remember that for the most part, SLCC libraries are the honor system – you remove books for your pleasure and you return them when you are finished – "on your honor." We as volunteers for the libraries are especially proud of the Main Clubhouse hard cover library. This beautiful room with hardwood cabinetry and a magnificent fireplace is lovely for relaxing with a book and delicious coffee drink. We keep hardcover books that are up to ten years old, all fiction, plus some classics. The books are arranged alphabetically by author, in genres that include Romance, General (fiction), and Mystery. Across the hall in the Main Clubhouse is the Paperback Library. This is also segregated by genre but there are many more areas and different categories than in other libraries. For example, we have Westerns here in paperback and hard back. Also a section of assorted children's books (for grandparents when grandchildren are visiting). There is a glass-enclosed case with audiobooks (on CD) which many Sun Lakers really enjoy – for road trips or "vacays." These you can check out in the lobby of the Main Clubhouse on Wednesday afternoons, 1 to 4 pm. You may return them to the reception desk. Based on library-use surveys from 2017, we know that many residents are asking for large print fiction books, including new releases. The large print section is directly across from the glass case. Some large print books are hard cover, some paperback. We get some donations, and the committee purchases some (this is where our book sale proceeds go) because we know there is demand. There is one shelf that is labeled "New York Times Bestsellers." The committee has purchased these large print books (almost $1,000 worth in 2017) because our sight-impaired library friends like to read new fiction just like everybody else. We generally add 20 to 30 new books three times a year. South Clubhouse Library is our smallest space – two bookcases opposite each other in the hallway. Mystery is on the east side, Romance on the west, alphabetically by author. Garden Club has graciously provided Sun Lakes with subscriptions to Reader's Digest condensed large print books which are directly below the Romances. Look soon for a trial period of a new section below these for "Health and Wellness." North Clubhouse Library is the most diverse room. There are paperback sections for Mystery and Romance, also Westerns. There is also a Classics section that includes plays, a Puzzles section for jigsaws, and some age-appropriate games for families. But on the east wall is the Non-fiction section – no other Sun Lakes library has this! Upon this wall there is a Biography section sorted by last name of subject, general non-fiction (by author), and War stories (by author). Look for the shelf tags to guide you to the appropriate section. The Library Committee and volunteers are a group who loves reading and enjoys the benefits of the Sun Lakes libraries – we hope you enjoy them too! Join us! Volunteers needed at the Library.
