Did You Know? FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2018 11 By Micki Rosen DID YOU KNOW THAT AUG. 3 IS WHITE WINE DAY? The earliest evidence we have of wine indicates that it was being made 7,500 years ago in what is now Iran. It is fairly certain that the birth of wine dates back way before this, but no archaeological evidence has been able to determine precisely when. Since its creation, it has held a place of high esteem in society, being used in holy rituals and traded among the noble and wealthy. White wine comprises the largest percentage of wines made in Germany and Switzerland, and the northern half of France is also known for its broad variety of white wines. In Catalonia there is a special sort of white wine known as Cava; champagne itself is only produced in the Champagne province of France. DID YOU KNOW THAT AUG. 30 IS SLINKY DAY? The Slinky was originally designed and sold in the 1940s. The inventor had accidentally knocked a spring off a shelf, and watched it "walk" down a series of books to a tabletop, and then to the floor where it neatly coiled itself. The creator, Richard James, figured with the right property of steel and the right tension, he could make a spring walk. He made 400 Slinky units and tried to sell them for $1 each, but they didn't take off until the fateful day that James was granted permission to set up an inclined plane in the toy section of Gimble's Department Store. Within 90 minutes, he had sold all 400 units. One year later, the Slinky was introduced at the American Toy Fair, and since then it has been marketed around the world, and used by NASA and the U.S. Army. DID YOU KNOW THAT AUG. 28 IS RAINBOW BRIDGE REMEMBRANCE DAY? Animals have served as beloved members of our family for time out of mind, and continue to do so to this day. This includes service animals that help those with conditions like blindness, PTSD and epilepsy, working animals on farms and police forces, and the simple companion pet that helps us through our loneliest times with undying unconditional love. Rainbow Bridge carries on an ancient tradition of memorializing our beloved pets with the same care and consideration as our departed human family. Pharaohs would entomb and mummify their cats, and animals of all sorts have been found in ritualized burials. The Ancient Egyptians buried their pets with all the things they would need in the afterlife, just like the humans that were mummified and buried. DID YOU KNOW THAT AUG. 23 IS SPONGE CAKE DAY? While its soft and delicate texture has often been attributed to the Victorians thanks to the Victorian Sponge Cake, in fact the sponge cake finds its roots in Italy. Sometime in the early 18th century, a respected and wealthy member of the Pallavinici family in Genoa commissioned a cake that was as light and delicate as sea foam. The result was an airy and delectable confection that was known as the Pate Genoise. This creation would soon come to be known as sponge cake. What set it apart was that it was created without any yeast or leavening agent, instead taking advantage of the properties of whipped egg whites to add air to the texture of the cake. Its popularity exploded throughout the world, and endless varieties came to pass. DID YOU KNOW THAT AUG. 14 IS CREAMSICLE DAY? Originally created by Frank Epperson in 1905, this industrious and inventive 11-year-old experimented with putting fruit juice around vanilla ice cream. The original "Epsicle", which later became known as a popsicle, creamsicle and dreamsicle, was done with just orange juice outside. Nowadays you can find them in lots of different flavors. This cold delight has been a staple of the summertime ice cream truck since they started moving around. Apparently the ones served on Long Island are less about the orange and more about the strong vanilla, while in Florida's Palm Beach you get a small amount of vanilla flavor and a crazy amount of orange.
