44 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2018 The Book Club selection for August is The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah (bestselling author of The Nightingale). In a story that takes place with the backdrop of Alaska. Leni Allbright, the protagonist, is the daughter of a New Age mother and a POW father. This fictional story (based loosely on true events) follows Leni through her teenage years into young adulthood as her father relocates the family to Alaska. The book juxtaposes surviving the physical hardships of life in Alaska with the emotional challenges of surviving a parent with PTSD. Our discussion will focus on both the story told by Kristen Hannah and what it is like to live and work in Alaska. You are warmly welcome to come join us on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 9:30 am in the Lodge, for a lively discussion and a fun opportunity to compare samples of akutaq (Eskimo ice cream) to home-made chocolate mousse. Our September selection will be The Woman in the Window by A J Finn. For more information on the Book Club, please telephone Doreen Sanders at (951) 769- 1913. ~ Terry Tucker Book Club In the past, the Writer's Club had gone on hiatus during the summer, but this year we are meeting throughout the summer. The club covers a wide range of interests. Members are writing poetry, short stories, family histories, novels, and serious non- fiction. Our topics for the meetings cover a wide range of areas, from creativity to writer's block, to ways of getting your book published. One of the items we discussed was Ed Pauls' thought-provoking book about money in politics Who's Accountable. The group continued discussing the idea of each of us writing a chapter on the history of what it was like when we were growing up. So much of this knowledge is being lost to new generations. We also looked at the possibility of having meetings in the evening so those working could attend. We will announce a date and time for the evening meeting in the near future. If you have enthusiasm for writing please join us. You don't need to be writing the next great novel, you just need to love writing. We welcome all forms of writing and at every level of experience and skill. We hope to see you there. Next meeting is Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 1:30 pm. ~ John Baeyertz Writer's Club
