By Theresa Rossetti, Resident We have so many options to play games at SDV! Check the calendar and the back pages of The View to find Mah Jongg, Hearts, Mexican Train, Pinochle, Billiards, Ping Pong, Bocce, Golf, Pickleball, Charades, Tennis, Water Volleyball, Bingo, Chess and the catch- all titles of Game Day and Game Night available. After you've lived here for a while, you usually find out that there are games being played on a rotating basis at homes in the neighborhood. There are Bunco groups, poker games and people just randomly getting together to play cards. When we moved in, I took a look at all of the activities available. I immediately eliminated all those sports related. I have no interest, no hand to eye coordination, and bad knees. These are not good omens for success at tennis, pickleball or even bocce. Another problem, most of the sporting activities take place early in the day. I'm a putterer. I putter around my house for at least two hours (usually three) before venturing out. After working for most of my adult life, I figure I'm entitled to take my time. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Now let's discuss the various games that involve sitting down. I never cared for chess and never played dominoes. I have played various card games over the years. The problem lies in the fact that I don't really enjoy them! However, there are social aspects to playing games, so I've been sucked into a few. Two years ago, I joined a Bunco group. Prior to moving here, the only time I had heard that word used was by my dad in reference to a unit in his precinct that investigated con-men and swindlers. Two points if you can guess what he did for a living. I have found out that Bunco requires no skill at all. Plus, it usually involves wine, snacks and lots of conversation, making it palatable to me. As for other games, I'm terrible at Mexican Train and usually lose to my neighbors when we play Hand and Foot. When I brought this topic up at the Communications Committee meeting, I was reminded that I do indeed like to play Charades. That game is silly, we laugh a lot and, as with most things here, we have wine and snacks. Truth be told, I'm not bad at the SDV version, proving that I spend too much time watching TV, going to the movies, and that my long-term memory is still intact. So, one for about 50 for me, proving that there is something for everyone here at SDV! The Games People Play SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | AUGUST 2018 11
