LIFESTYLE DIRECTOR REPORT
By Richard Booth, Lifestyle Director
With the hot summer months extending their stay, exercising
outdoors can be detrimental to your health. With that said, there are
a few ways to avoid heat stress. First, make sure you take in plenty
of fluids (water) to keep your body hydrated. For every 15 minutes
of exercise make sure to drink eight ounces of water. Avoid being
outside during the hottest part of the day (1 to 5 pm). Also make
sure to wear loose, light colored and lightweight clothing. Finally
listen to your body! The first stages of heat stress are muscle cramps,
nausea, headaches, goosebumps, unsteady footing and or a decrease
or stoppage in sweat. Stop exercising if you experience any of these
symptoms. Following these steps will aid in continuing your health
all year long.
