FROM THE RECREATION DEPARTMENT: HEALTHY AGING By Jason Ewals September is Healthy Aging month which is an annual observance designed to focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older. No known substance can extend life, but the chances of staying healthy and living a long time can be improved. Here are a few ways to help: • Eat a balanced diet, including five helpings of fruits and vegetables a day. • Exercise regularly, especially stretching • Get regular health check-ups. • Practice safety habits at home and away to prevent falls and fractures. • Stay active through work, play and community. • Avoid overexposure to the sun and the cold. • If you drink, moderation is the key. When you drink, let someone else drive. • Keep a positive attitude toward life. Do things that make you happy. HEARING AID CHECK & CLEANING Do you have hearing aids but you're not sure if they are working properly or if they need to be cleaned? Well we have a great opportunity for you. Johnsons Hearing will be on-site in the Bus Room for a two hour period once a month to check and clean your hearing aids free of charge. The dates are Sept. 14 and Oct. 12 from 10 am to 12 pm. Last year we raised over $7,700 and we hope to surpass that this year. The walk is two miles around Country Club Drive to Riviera, and back up Country Club Drive to the Main Clubhouse. If you don't feel you can do the two miles, there are turn back increments at half a mile, one mile and 1.5 miles so there is a walk for everyone. Registration forms can be picked up at the Recreation Desk starting Mon., Sept. 3. The cost is $20 pp (checks only – made out to SLCC) and includes a goodie bag with an event t-shirt, continental breakfast after the walk and an opportunity to listen to a couple of decorated veterans. For any resident unable to walk, you can still participate by entering your golf cart into the event. We ask that the carts be decorated with a U.S. Flag, a Service Flag, or a Wounded Warrior Flag to support the event. Please note, golf cart use is for disabled residents ONLY.
