Did You Know? FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 2018 11 By Micki Rosen DID YOU KNOW THAT SEPT. 7 IS BUY A BOOK DAY? It is inarguable that books have been one of the greatest contributors to the advancement of the human race; by moving the hearts of many over the ages, stimulating their imaginations and helping them see the world in an entirely different light. Books have also served the simple but vital purpose of passing knowledge down from generation to generation. The creators of Buy a Book Day want nothing more than for people to take a moment to truly appreciate books and their numerous roles in the human experience. So celebrate this day by starting that book you've been meaning to read! DID YOU KNOW THAT SEPT. 16 IS PLAY-DOH DAY? Play-Doh was originally developed in the 1930s, not as a toy but as a product for cleaning wallpaper! It was not until the 1950s that it was marketed as a toy, in the trademark vibrant colors of red, blue, yellow and white. Over two billion tubs of the enchanting putty have now been sold. If all that Play-Doh were rolled into a giant ball, it would weigh as much as 2,000 Statues of Liberty! The range of colors now includes paradise purple, silver and gold. DID YOU KNOW THAT SEPT. 27 IS TOURISM DAY? Tourism has been a part of the human experience as long as there have been distant places to go and experience. It was originally the province of the wealthy, with travel being difficult and expensive, but it afforded opportunities to learn new languages, experience different cuisines, and generally to see what there was to see. Tourism can be traced back to the Shulgi period in Ancient China, when kings took great pains to protect the roads and build waystations for travelers. In the Middle Ages, travel became even more important for religious reasons: Buddhism, Islam and Christianity all had pilgrimage traditions that required travelling great distances in the interest of health and spiritual improvement. Find your inner traveler and get out there and experience the places you've always wanted to see. DID YOU KNOW THAT SEPT. 30 IS PONY EXPRESS DAY? The Pony Express existed for 18 months between April 1860 and October 1861. During this time, if you wanted to send a letter or small package from anywhere east past St. Joseph, Missouri, there was only one way to go. The Pony Express was a massive employer for its time, with up to 80 young riders employed at any given time; there were stringent requirements on their age, size and weight. The Pony Express preferred to employ the youngest riders they could, in part for their resilience and in part for how light they were. The lighter a rider was, the longer the horse could run and the more cargo it could carry; since the horses went full-tilt for 10-15 miles at a stretch before changing, this was of vital importance. The rider changed out every 75 to 100 miles, but the mail never slowed even in the worst of weather. The average trip from coast to coast on horseback took 10 days. DID YOU KNOW THAT SEPT. 15 IS INTERNATIONAL EAT AN APPLE DAY? International Eat An Apple Day has its roots in thousands of cultural celebrations around the globe. The presence of apples in multiple mythologies shows how important it is; for example, the Norse thought the goddess' apples granted eternal youth. Apples are part of many countries' food cultures. Consider the American apple pie, so much a part of our country's identity that people say "as American as apple pie." Ireland was even known to make a Beef Apple Stew that decidedly had its own flavor palate.
