24 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2018 Walking is a favorite activity for many Four Seasons' residents. A June 2017 Recreation Survey conducted through the Daily Report surveyed residents to find out what activities they enjoyed in the community. Walking ranked high on the list of enjoyed activities. Of the 432 responses to the survey, 75 percent or 324 residents said they walked daily. Walking is both a fun and healthy activity and should be done with safety in mind. The Safety Committee has looked to the National Safety Council for safe walking tips. Walkers may consider the tips helpful for a safe walking experience. • Become well-hydrated before walking. Drinking one or two glasses of water one to two hours before walking helps the body to reach a comfortable level of hydration. • Dress correctly. Wear light-colored or reflective clothing like shocking-pink or brilliant orange. Even walking shoes have reflective material on the heels. • Wear proper footwear. Walking shoes have some features that other shoes do not have. Walking shoes are usually lightweight and have good shock absorptive qualities. • Carry ID. Always carry some form of identification in case of an accident or medical emergency. • Walk on the sidewalks or trails. Avoid walking on the street and walk defensively. Only cross streets in designated crosswalks and look both ways before crossing. Make eye contact with drivers of oncoming vehicles to make sure they see you. • Limit use of headphones and electronic devices while walking. Noise-canceling headphones should be a no-no while walking. The potential for injury while texting is also great. • Know when to stop and take a break. Even if you are a well-seasoned walker, know when to cut your walk short and be alert to any medical symptoms you may be experiencing. The Safety Committee meets the first Tuesday of the month at 10 am in the RCN Building. We welcome all. ~ Kaye Harvey Safety Committee
