Sat., Nov. 10, 9:30 – 11:30 am: Please join us for our 7th Annual Veterans Walk to honor all who have served our country. This walk is inside Sun Lakes and all proceeds go to the local VFW Troop 233. Last year we raised over $7,700 and we hope to surpass that this year. The walk is two miles around Country Club Drive to Riviera, and back up Country Club Drive to the Main Clubhouse. If you don't feel you can do the two miles, there are turn back increments at half a mile, one mile and 1.5 miles so there is a walk for everyone. Registration forms can be picked up at the Recreation Desk starting Mon., Sept. 3. The cost is $20 pp (checks only – made out to SLCC) and includes a goodie bag with an event t-shirt, continental breakfast after the walk and an opportunity to listen to a couple of decorated veterans. For any resident unable to walk, you can still participate by entering your golf cart into the event. We ask that the carts be decorated with a U.S. Flag, a Service Flag, or a Wounded Warrior Flag to support the event. Please note, golf cart use is for disabled residents ONLY. If you know anyone who would like to sponsor this event, please have them contact Jason at 769-6651. Continental Breakfast is for participants only. Annual Veterans Walk | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2018 | 17 FROM THE RECREATION DEPARTMENT: HEALTHY LUNGS By Jason Ewals To celebrate Healthy Lung Month, here are a couple ways to keep your lungs in tiptop shape. Smoking is the first thing that springs to mind. Avoiding cigarette smoke is not the end all be all of keeping a healthy pair of lungs, but it will help. Regular exercise is a major factor. Heart, lungs, and muscles function better when they are regularly made to work harder than they do at rest. Immunization can lower your risk of contracting a lung condition. Influenza, once a mass killer, is now only a sometimes-serious health problem. Cold temperatures and dry air tend to stress the airways. Getting a shot to help ward off the virus is a good way to keep your lungs healthy all year 'round.
