The September Luau was a wonderful event put on by the hard-working Social Committee volunteers who made beautiful table decorations (directed by Diane Corte), moved plants, installed solar lights and lit flaming tiki torches. We had a wonderful Hawaiian-themed meal prepared and served by Francisco's Bistro, great weather, and superb entertainment provided by Vylani's Polynesian dancers from Temecula - five wahinis (beautiful young girls) and three warriors (handsome young men). There were many costume changes and various dances representing many islands, including Tahiti. It was emceed by "Jungle Jim." Also, great music and announcements by our local voice Rod Robinson. All in all, a wonderful evening, plus some great participation by our residents who learned to move their hips to the music up on stage. Later in the evening there was dancing to some great music. Thanks to all of you for participating and volunteering your talents. | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | NOVEMBER 2018 | 15 Social Committee: Luau ARTIFICIAL TURF (GRASS) – DOES IT PAY TO REPLACE YOUR LAWN? I replaced my lawn with artificial turf five years ago. It still looks good and it's so easy to maintain. Yesterday a neighbor asked me if it was cost effective. She thought it was expensive to install. I told her that depends on how much you pay a gardener to mow your lawn and how much water you will save. So, let's look at my cost and the cost today. When I replaced mine it cost me $10.60 per square foot. Total cost was $1,591. What I saved: Gardener to mow lawn at $35 per month average for four years. Water not used for lawn at about $6 per month average. Time to break even, dividing cost by savings = 39 months or three years and three months. Today the cost per square foot is higher, about $16 per square foot, but the cost to mow the lawn is also higher about $50 per month, so it may take longer to pay off. Do the numbers. Note: I placed two areas about 30 sq. ft. each and one about 80 sq. ft. as planters with mow curbs around them and a five foot diameter area around a tree. This saved on turf and also met the 60 percent green rule. Read page 14 (Artificial/Synthetic Turf ) in the Architectural Standards and Regulations guide for specifics on installing the turf.
