24 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | NOVEMBER 2018 | With the holidays around the corner, we will encounter many recreations of Jesus's birth on Christmas cards and in Nativity scenes, with figures dressed in "biblical" costumes. Many of us don't realize that the people at the time of Jesus were not wearing that type of garments. Rather, these are takes on famous paintings. Leonardo, for instance, attired his Virgin Mary in typical Renaissance dress and Rembrandt portrayed the Holy Family as 17th century Dutch burghers. Now, centuries later, they seem to us appropriately biblical. To reflect on what Christ's birth means to me and bring its story to our times, I followed the Old Masters and painted in my Nativity scene people I knew, dressed in today's clothes. The Virgin Mary in Annunciation panel is as scared as any teenager would be when receiving news she'll soon be bearing a child. And Saint Joseph is riding a bike, because that is what he might use to take his small family to Egypt, if they were fleeing Holy Land today. ~ Andre Lohnert Lodge Gallery Wall and Cabinet - The walls and cabinet for the months of November/December will be the works of Andre Lohnert. We paint many different subject matters from ocean scenes to winter scenes, garden scenes to portraits, Christmas ornaments to bird houses and even a four seasons collection. We always say if we don't like it we'll paint over it. There's nothing we can't fix! We meet every Tuesday from 10 am - 1 pm. Come in and check out the painters progress. Beading Buddies - we have been together almost nine years! We started as a tatting class and have evolved as well. We still tat, however, most of us have moved on to beading.
