Sat., Nov. 10, 9:30 – 11:30 am: Please join us for our 7th Annual Veterans Walk to honor all who have served our country. This walk is inside Sun Lakes and all proceeds go to the local VFW Troop 233. Last year we raised over $7,700 and we hope to surpass that this year. The walk is two miles around Country Club Drive to Riviera, and back up Country Club Drive to the Main Clubhouse. If you don't feel you can do the two miles, there are turn back increments at half a mile, one mile and 1.5 miles so there is a walk for everyone. Registration forms can be picked up at the Recreation Desk starting Mon., Sept. 3. The cost is $20 pp (checks only – made out to SLCC) and includes a goodie bag with an event t-shirt, continental breakfast after the walk and an opportunity to listen to a couple of decorated veterans. For any resident unable to walk, you can still participate by entering your golf cart into the event. We ask that the carts be decorated with a U.S. Flag, a Service Flag, or a Wounded Warrior Flag to support the event. Please note, golf cart use is for disabled residents ONLY. If you know anyone who would like to sponsor this event, please have them contact Jason at 769-6651. Continental Breakfast is for participants only. Annual Veterans Walk | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2018 | 17 FROM THE RECREATION DEPARTMENT: HOLIDAY WEIGHT By Jason Ewals With the holidays coming up weight gain is on many people's mind. Here are a few tips on keeping that holiday weight at bay. 1. Use Moderation When Cheating On Your Diet: Allow yourself to indulge a little here and there, but limit your portions. 2. Make Yourself A Goal To Do Something Active Each Day: Try to get out and move for at least 30 minutes. 3. When Short On Time, Emphasize on Weight Training: Muscle aids in burning fat, and will help to fight off the extras that you normally don't eat. 4. Eat A Balance Of Macronutrients: Do not cut out any food groups. If you are hungry, fill up on protein and veggies as protein increases your metabolism by up to 20 percent and veggies take more calories to digest than what they contain. 5. Limit Your Alcohol Consumption: You are better off eating an extra cookie than consuming numerous cocktails. Excess alcohol contributes a lot to fat gain. 6. Drink Plenty Of Water: Many times we will overeat because we are dehydrated and thirsty. Therefore, make sure that your water intake is adequate. 7. Eat Your Regularly Scheduled Meals: If you skip meals in preparation for a family gathering and the buffet of food set out at a holiday party, you are setting yourself up for disaster.
