| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2018 | 19 If you have questions about golf in Sun Lakes, please call the Main Pro Shop at 845-2135 or the Executive Pro Shop at 769-8444. SLCC Golf & Pro Shop News Al Vallecorsa, PGA Director of Golf We are being asked all the time about turf reduction so as you probably know or have recently seen we have been working on areas that have been identified for turf reduction. Currently most of these areas are areas that come in contact with the golf course and the streets. There will also be more information coming soon and an opportunity for you to vote for more turf reduction that is along the perimeter walls of the golf course. These are areas where turf has become "unsightly" and for years the water percentage has been turned down based on state directive to conserve water. For this a landscape plan was purchased from an architect to give us a plan to follow in the event the turf reduction continued. With this, the championship golf course irrigation lines were due and in the reserves. However, this was placed on hold until the vote of the turf reduction. Until the final outcome is determined, it is unclear how to proceed with the irrigation and placement of sprinkler heads. As the irrigation stands now, we retained a consultant who has developed a plan for turf reduction. Estimates are showing that turf reduction saves 25-30 percent of water and we are hopeful the members see the value with conserving water, saving money in the long run, and enhancing their property values with turf reduction plantings. There is roughly 180 acres of turf on the championship course with 58.2 being converted to turf reduction. After the championship course was addressed the executive course would follow. The championship course was picked first due to the overall reduction size of turf. If you have questions about this, the golf operation, or general requests, please obtain a resident request form in the administration office and both golf shops. The (GAC) meets on the second Monday at 2 pm in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. As we enter the fall season the golf courses are getting some cosmetic work. Currently we just finished the aeration of the greens on both courses. This work spans over two weeks and forces us to utilize every staff member to do the many aspects of the process. When aeration is being done this work is the focus for the duration. Consequently, other detail and bunker maintenance gets deferred. We also have four other projects going on at the same time. Please, as you look at the landscaping being done, realize that we are at the end of the season and many plant varieties will need time to mature. When much of the planting was being done the weather was in the low 100s, this caused additional stress to the plants. We will see recovery but then dormancy will happen for the Crepe Myrtles. Next spring we will see beautiful flowers and vibrant colors from this plant palette. Over the next few weeks, we will also begin overseeding some key areas such as tee- tops; collars and the driving range main tee. This must be done before cold nights begin.
