30 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | DECEMBER 2018 | From the President – Tom Moore: We made it to the end of 2018! Before we wrap up the year, I have a few thoughts I'd like to share. First, I want to thank all the board members: Ron Hulme, Vice President: You did a stellar job as Veep. It's a tough job, but I knew you could handle it! Thanks Ron. Vivian Ceballos, Treasurer: We got off to a rough start with the bank and all the hoops we had to jump through, but it all finally came together, and you have done a wonderful job. Don't put your pen away quite yet, we still have a few checks to write. Thanks Vivian! Chaz McManis, Secretary: I didn't fully appreciate what a difficult task it is to take the pandemonium of our monthly meetings and condense it down to a few succinct paragraphs until I had to do it a couple of times. You do a GREAT JOB! Thank you, Chaz. Addis "Scotty" Scott, Tournament Chair: I only get 400 words per article, and I could spend all of that and more to try to convey my appreciation for what you do to keep this club on course, but even that wouldn't be adequate. Thank you so much Scotty. Elliot Yeager, Membership Chair: You not only took care of membership duties, but you filled in extremely well when Scotty was unavailable to do the weekly parings and results posting. Good job El, Thank you! Tom Johnson, Rules Chair: Great job keeping us up on all the new rules that go into effect next year! Thank you, Tom. Melody Lewis, Handicap Chair: You were a Bulldog in making sure that all members (myself included) were posting their scores in a timely manner. Fantastic job! Thanks Melody. Gary Sopata, Course Liaison: Excellent job working with the golf course management to improve course conditions. Thank you, Gary,! Bonnie Moore, Social Chair: You arranged food, beverages, and entertainment for a cumulative total of over 300 members and I didn't hear a single complaint! Thank you and your committee for all that you did this year! And most important, thanks to you, the general membership for all your support and suggestions throughout the year. Without your input, we couldn't do what we do! One more thing: Whoever put the $5 bill in the suggestion box. If you don't claim it (using the serial number of the note for identification), we will roll it over into the treasury for next year! From the Tournament Chair – Addis Scott: The Club Championship Tournament winners were: Flight A Low Gross and overall Low Gross - Gary Sopata, Flight A Low Net – Charlie Morgan, Flight B Low Gross – Bill Hissam, Flight B Low Net – David Cometa, Flight C Low Gross – Ron Leatherman, Flight C Low Net and overall Low Net – Bonnie Moore. Our December 2018 Game Schedule is: Dec. 4 at 8 am: Partners-Same Flight: Best Net Scores Dec. 11 at 8 am: 4- Person Team: Best Two Net Scores Per Hole Dec. 18 at 8 am: Individual: Low Net - Throw Out Worst and Best Hole Dec. 25 Christmas Day – No Golfing From the Rules Chair – Tom Johnson: There needs to be opportunities yet this year and early next year for our members to learn about the new rules which begin to take effect in January 2019 as well as answer questions about the current rules. We are open to input on what would be convenient time wise and location. All players should consider looking at a video on YouTube which covers the 20 most significant changes in the rules which take effect January 2019. The URL for the video is "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chPOtfLUHC0. Next time you play in one of our club events, please take the time to check out the local rules which are printed on the back of the score cards. These are rules set by our club which along with The Rules of Golf govern the play at our golf events. Regarding rule issues during club golf events, any protests or issues are to be made known during the play of the hole and before teeing off at the next hole. Unresolved issues should be noted on the scorecard, so they can be resolved before scores are posted. Once scorecards are turned in and the scores are posted, protests are too late to be considered. The player who play is in question needs to be aware of the issue at the time so that they can take appropriate action to correct any infraction of rules. The rules allow a player to play two balls for the remainder of that hole if the rules cannot be resolved. The club with be providing members with new rule books. From the Handicap Chair – Melody Lewis: As the year closes, I decided to switch it up and discuss another side of golf. The following quote from Tom Watson tells it all. "Golf is a game of ego, but it is also a game of integrity: the most important thing is you do what is right when no one is looking." Ever play with someone that tries to take advantage of the rules in an incorrect way or assume their playing partners are ignorant of the rules? Ever see someone play the "foot" wedge, drop a ball from their pocket while searching for their ball or fail to declare their ball out of bounds knowing full well that indeed it is? The First Tee teaches the following core values to the youth taking up the game: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment. These are pretty good values to live by, no matter what age you are. All are important, but honesty and integrity go hand-in- hand with the game of golf. Golf is the only sport that expects players to demonstrate integrity, honesty and fairness during any type of play. Elite golfers understand that proper conduct on the course is as important as the result. Bending the rules, stretching the truth or straight out cheating is just bad form. You can learn a lot about someone by the way they act on the golf course. So, as we head into the new year, remember, at the end of the day, integrity, honesty and fairness are the name of the game.
