Pickleball Come on out and try the fastest growing sport in Four Seasons. It's fun! It's easy to learn! Best of all, it's great exercise! If you haven't tried it, you are missing out. After debating over the scheduled days and trying different combinations, we now have a set schedule. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 am. We have good news for our players. Bids have been submitted for painting the proper lines in the courts and one has been accepted. Our hopes are to see shiny new lines soon. For the time being, we are playing with temporary nets that are the proper height but we are working on getting permanent nets also. Our numbers are growing steadily and we have a roster of close to 40 players. On a regular basis, we have 15 to 17 players at each scheduled day. There is no doubt that we are going to have to start lobbying for another court as new members are added weekly. Come on out and join us. We have extra paddles for those who want to try out the game. We know you'll be hooked. Pickleball is definitely the new, fun sport in our community. For more information, call Linda at (951) 797-3939 or email to lbsnipes@yahoo.com. ~ Linda Snipes Paddle Tennis Hi Paddlers… As the paddle courts are washed and maintained every Tuesdays, we have changed our play days to Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 2 to 4 pm. We hope that the new play days fit your schedule. Come and join us for exercise, fun and friendship. For more information please contact Alan Chan at (951) 7694202 or Jim Cochran at (951) 769-5525. ~ Alan Chan Neither rain nor sleet nor snow will stop these paddle ballers. The game had to be stopped after this picture was taken as the court became icy and slippery. The players are Gary and Jim on the left and opposing are Terry (in shorts) and Rob. Now that you know what you are missing, do come and join in the fun. Billiards for Fun The Four Seasons Billiards for Fun Group has a new nickname: The Four Seasons "Partying" Billiards for Fun Group. In December the group attended our bi-monthly potluck luncheon in the Ballroom which happened to be the day that most of the Beaumont/Banning/Yucaipa, etc. area lost electricity for several hours ~ remember? Yes, we ate our fabulous potluck contributions in the dark! We all laughed about it ~ especially having to play billiards with no lights on in the billiards room. It was memorable, that's for sure. Also, a week later, two of our group members, Ron and Judy Erickson, hosted a Christmas party at their beautiful new home. Again, there was lots of great food and libations, and everyone had a wonderful time. Since Christmas and New Years both fell on Tuesday (our group day), we had two weeks when we didn't play billiards on a weekly basis. Once we returned, however, no one appeared one bit rusty! We always have such a great time: no mandatory practices and no preset, stressful competitions. We play with group members, just for the joy of the game! If you're interested in joining the Four Seasons "Partying" Billiards for Fun Group, contact Eileen Gilbert at (951) 922-6829 for more information. We are so saddened to hear of the passing of one of our club members, Bob Travlee. Although very quiet, he was extremely talented, a great billiards player, and we all enjoyed having him in our group. We'll miss you, Bob. ~ Eileen Gilbert The 8-Ball Club The 8-Ball Club meets for the enjoyment of playing billiards for fun and competitive play with in-house tournaments; as well as tournaments with other 8 ball clubs located in nearby retirement communities. 8-Ball Club meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month. The in-house 8-Ball Tournaments are on the second Wednesday and the 9-Ball in house Tournaments on the third Saturday of each month. For away tournaments check the bulletin board in the poolroom for dates and location. The club practices together on non-tournament Mondays as well as every Wednesday and Friday at 7 pm. The December tournament at Del Webb was a close one. The win went to 40 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2013 | sports activities (L-R) Pete Antoine, Leonard Zavala, Linda and Brooks Adams The potluck party group playing billiards in the dark! (L-R) Norma Jean Cohen, Bob Travlee, Bob Kemp, Mary Campbell, John Campbell, Mike Olsen, Johnny Ramirez, Leonard Zavala and Pete Antoine our 8-Ball Club. We were holding a lead of eight wins to Del Webb's seven wins. Rick and Marion Loney (who playing as a team won three out of four games during the tournament) were playing the last game of the 16 game contest. A loss would tie the tournament at eight games each and the winner to be decided in a one game playoff. Rick's shot at the 8 ball required cutting the 8 ball, followed by a bank off the far rail. He made the difficult shot rolling the 8 ball into the corner pocket dead center and clinching the tournament win. The in-house tournament winners for December 2012 were Dewey Allen, who won two straight games over Pete Antoine to become the December tournament champion (8-ball) and Rick Loney won the 9-Ball championship game playing against Dennis Cleveland who took second. Overall, Dewey Allen won the title of Champion for most 8-Ball in-house tournaments wins in 2012. Kenney Payne won a tie-breaker match versus Del Lyles to become the overall 9-Ball Champion for the most in-house tournament wins for 2012. ~ Rick Loney 8-Ball Club In-House Tournament SPORTS ACTIVITIES | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2013 41
