paisano club library advisory committee mystery theater & more drama club The New Year brought in the Paisano's first event of 2013, and it was an excellent way to start the New Year. The food venue was a pot luck consisting of appetizers/hors d'eourves. The entertainment was a music program by the Notables, a local group of men and women who brought melodic harmony to the membership. There is still time to join us for our Feb. 1, pot luck meeting at 5 pm. Everyone is welcome! Since it is a pot luck, no need to RSVP. Info., Jan Stapel, 769-9810. "Joey Mercado and her Friends" will entertain us. Joey, who is a recently retired teacher and counselor, now enjoys entertaining with her singing and ventriloquism. She also volunteers at the Alzheimer's unit at The Lakes a couple times a month. She has been involved in community theater as an actor, director, and choreographer. Because of her passion for theater and children, she has started a "Children's Theater in the Pass" at The Woman's Club in Banning through the Banning Alliance. She is a substitute and music teacher at the Morongo Indian School for ages three to eighth grade. In the past she has been a lead singer in bands, made an album in Nashville, and has done some stand-up comedy in Hollywood. She has lived in Sun Lakes for about a year and a half and has enjoyed entertaining for parties and special events, especially when she gets to make people laugh. Everyone has talents and Joey is glad that she has the opportunity to share her talents with the community. Save the date for our special guest, "Mr. Sinatra," aka Ray Rendon, as we celebrate St. Joseph's Day on March 1. We will offer a scrumptious Italian catered meal for $13 pp. For more information on this event, please contact Dee Nicoletti at 846-3096. Meetings are always held at the South Clubhouse the first Friday of the month. We would love to have you place an application to join us. Our Main Clubhouse receptionist will be glad to provide you with all the necessary paperwork. Should you like to join our great group of volunteers, call Peggy Inman at 845-8609. Thanks to everyone who has been donating books to our libraries. If you have a large number of books to donate, please call Ann Reese, 845-3775. We'd like to notify our great volunteers so they're not too overwhelmed. Our book for this month is Sweet Tooth, by Ian McEwan. An Anglican bishop's daughter gets in over her head with British Intelligence in this John le Carre-esque caper from the author of Atonement. Brash, bookish Serena just might make a perfect spy - if she can keep her heart under wraps. We are set to begin rehearsals for our end of February/first of March blockbuster show, "That's Entertainment." And what a show it will be! Producers and directors, Jan Stapel and Gaylord Spence, corroborate that this show will indeed live up to the growing reputation that this show has acquired over the past two or three years. "We have it all," they say, and add, "Singing, dancing, comedy, and an outright unbelievable cast!" The theme itself, "Block-buster Hits From Stage and Screen," makes one just imagine which hits will be portrayed to slake our theater-going appetites. $8 Reserved Table tickets will go on sale in the lobby of the Main Clubhouse Feb. 11 - 23, Monday through Friday, from 10 am until 2 pm. Make certain that you get your tickets early, as many community residents were disappointed when tickets sold out very quickly for last year's show performances. Performance dates will be Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 28 through March 2 for 7 pm curtain calls, and a 3 pm Sunday Matinée on March 3. We'd also like to report that the auditions for cast parts in our first of June mystery/comedy were incredible! Not only will we be able to cast our number one choice of plays, "Tomb With A View," written by Norman Robbins, we also have discovered some new talent from within the community! We are extremely excited to be able to showcase some of these new members when this play hits the stage in late spring. With this cast being lead by the considerable talents of its director, Joseph Vallely, the community will again have another great play to reminisce about for months to come! If you are new to the community or new to retirement and are looking for activities that stimulate your mind and harness your energies, consider visiting the Mystery Theater group. We hold a monthly business meeting usually on the first Tuesday of the month, in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom at 1 pm. Please join us on Feb. 5, and meet our members and see what we are all about. You'd be surprised what being on the stage does to motivate your mind, social skills and give your life purpose! If you like to stay busy we are the perfect group for you! Info., Ginger, 845-9685. "It's Never Say Die," or maybe "Once More With Feeling" for the Drama Club's Spring production of "Love, Loss, and What I Wore." Some of you might remember we tried to do this show back in 2011 and it was pulled out from under us a week before production. Well, this time, with contract in hand, we are doing a "Second Time Around" on this wonderful play by the late Nora Ephron and her sister Delia. The play itself is a series of powerfully funny and poignant monologues and ensemble pieces about women, clothes, and the important memories those clothes bring up: mothers, prom dresses, buying bras, and of course, men. We have assembled a super cast for this production, including Harriet Briant, Rose Hermanson, Lynn Lewis, Pat Naylor, Corky Evans, and newcomer Fran Rayner. The plays' direction is in the capable hands of Sallie Smelker, who promises to deliver a fabulous and somewhat unusual production. Dates for the show are April 5 and 6, at 7 pm, and April 7, at 2 pm. Ticket sales will start March 18, 9 am - 2 pm in the lobby. Try not to miss this one of a kind show. We always welcome new members and there are many behind the scenes jobs available as well as performing parts. We are a social club that enjoys a monthly dinner at various restaurants, as well as attending plays at other venues.
