The steering committee is now compiling a list of interested residents. The new venue will probably be in the South Clubhouse on Saturday or Sunday evenings. This is a great and exciting opportunity for the many talented vocalists and music enthusiasts to perform and have fun with their friends. You are invited to express your support and interest by contacting any member of the steering committee and adding your name to the many now on the interest list. A professional DJ with stateof-the-art equipment has been contacted and is available to discuss the details with the group. All are welcome to join. The membership fee is $15 per year. Each month, we have a topic of interest to our members and refreshments are served. Come join us and see what projects interest you. We always need new and interested members as many hands are needed in many ways. In 2012 we saw our membership increase to 279 members. Our speaker for the month of February will be Sandy Rinehart from Cherry Valley Nursery. Sandy will be speaking about trees in our yards and others. Cherry Valley Nursery generously donates all the potted plants that are given away at each and every general meeting . SEE'S CANDIES SALES: We will be selling candy for Valentines Day in the Main Clubhouse Lobby on Feb. 7, 8, 12 and 13. In addition to delicious chocolates, we will have peanut brittle (regular and sugar free), lollipops and gift certificates. As always,shop early for the best selection. This is the Garden Club's major fund raiser each year and enables us to support many local charities. TRIPS: The trip to Pioneer Town and Gublers Orchids in Landers was very interesting. The orchids were beautiful and available to purchase. Orchid raising is a very serious business and the orchids are watched over like children. We ate lunch at Pappy & Harriets in Pioneer Town, which is a popular spot, and it was delicious. We will be traveling to Joshua Tree National Park in Landers on April 25. The cost is $35 . There will be more information in the March Lifestyles but you may contact Evelyn Hawkins for further details at 845-7199. This is a very interesting trip and the rock formations in Joshua Tree are amazing. THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO: The Annual Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show will be held on May 8. DID YOU KNOW? We collect cell phones, box tops, Campbells Soup labels, eyeglasses, suitcases/backpacks and unopened toiletries that are given to local charities such as Carol's Kitchen, Table of Plenty and the Banning Senior Center. Over the years we have collected 10,153 soup labels, 13,159 box tops, 325 suitcases, 123 cell phones, 538 toys and stuffed animals and 499 pairs of eye glasses which were donated to the appropriate cause. Any of these items may be brought to the monthly meeting or call Joan at 845-6715. PENNY PINES: Over the years the Garden Club Penny Pines program has purchased 325 acres of trees in our local San Bernardino forests. The Garden Club also supports the Plant A Tree program, which again benefits our local forests. You can buy an acre of trees in the forest for $68 per acre. T his is a wonderful way to honor a loved one for any occasion. For more information call Nadine at 769-1004. PLANT A ROW: Onions are now being planted in the Plant A Row gardens at Dysart Park. There is a group of volunteers who love to garden and they grow vegetables that are given to our local charities that feed the hungry in the Pass area. Are you a dirt digger? FRUIT PICKERS: We have been harvesting lemons, grapefruit and tangerines here in Sun Lakes. So far, the citrus has not frozen. Please call us if you or your neighbors have more than you are going to use and we will come harvest your trees.
