beginning bridge Beginning Bridge meets on Mondays in the Main Clubhouse from 12:30 - 3:30 pm, and is free to all residents. It is not necessary to have a partner or to sign up in advance. Info., Lynn at 769-1868. bridge marathon Couples or pairs of ladies or men are needed for the Couples Bridge Marathon. The cost is $25 per couple or pair. Prizes are given to the top 3 teams and for teams bidding and making a Grand Slam. Prizes will be awarded at a dinner in November. The game does not earn Master Points, but it allows players to enjoy the experience of duplicate bridge without the competitive stress that sometimes occurs in sanctioned games. Info., Nadine, 769-1004. chess 4 fun The newly formed Chess Club in Sun Lakes is seeking new players. We invite players of all skill levels for social play and gladly encourage new players to join. We meet every Saturday in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room, 1 - 5 pm. Bring your Chess set and clocks, if you have them, so we will not run short. For players new to chess, it is recommended they learn the fundamentals of the game, board layout, names of pieces and how the pieces can be played before engaging in play with others. There are excellent tutorials on YouTube and throughout the Internet which will give you the needed skills to begin playing. Our participants are divided into groups of about 8 - 10 teams and play each team within their assigned group once during the course of the year. The cost for the year is $16 from which a prize fund is established to cover the top 3 winning teams in each group and for each team bidding and making a grand slam at any time throughout the year. These cash prizes are then awarded to the winners during a luncheon at the end of the season. Pete, 8451144. the friendship club Join us on Sun., March 10, for Patricia Welch and "Songs From The Movies." Her accompanist is the Dr. Jack Poster Orchestra. Ms. Welch, professional singer and now international diva, is in the middle of a rich, successful career. Gifted with an incredible style and range, from opera to country, she has been on Broadway with Yul Brynner, as Tuptim in "King & I," Maria in "The Sound Of Music," Marsinah in "Kismet," Hodel, in "Fiddler," and received rave notices as Maria, in "West Side Story." She worked in Las Vegas with Robert Goulet and Wayne Newton. She wrote and performed a song at the first memorial of 9/11 in Washington, D.C. and is a guest Anthem singer at Dodger Stadium. Over the years, Patricia Welch has performed over 200 concerts as well as numerous corporate events. Her vocal talents have been heard on major TV networks, including HBO, PBS, Movies of the week, and at the Hollywood Bowl. Info., Roz, 769-3757. art league Attention Clubs and Groups: If you did not have a banner painted for Sun Lakes' 25th Anniversary celebration and would like one painted now, call Jerry Searcy at 845-8198. Banners may be hung on Sun Lakes streets in the future. Sun Lakes artist Bridgette Greb will demonstrate her watercolor and pastel technique at the February General Meeting on Sun., Feb. 17, at 2 pm at the South Clubhouse. All residents are invited. Monthly classes are held on Mondays in the Arts and Crafts Room at the Main Clubhouse from 9 am to 12 noon. Guest artists teach a variety of media including oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolors. The guest artist for February is Suni Godbold, who specializes in watercolor. This class will begin on Mon., Feb. 4, and is for all levels of experience. Members will be given priority in signing up for the class, but non-members may be put on a waiting list. The fee for the class is $30 for the month for members and $35 for non-members. In addition to the monthly meetings with mini-shows and Monday morning art classes, we have other activities including workshops, spring and fall juried art shows, golf cart decorating for the 4th of July parade, and an annual Social and Art Auction.
