Main Ballroom FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK By George Moyer, SLCC HOA President I realize that January is considered winter, but this one was ridiculous. Walking your dog gave a whole new meaning to pet devotion and love. There are two important subjects I would like to bring to your attention. First Feb. 1 and Feb. 20, anyone eligible and wanting to run for the Master Board can go to the Administrative Offices and pick up the paperwork to do so. This year we will be electing two members to the Board. I know that many people do not run because they fear they are not qualified. However, you would be surprised how quickly you can grasp the technicalities and nuances of our wonderful community's operations. What is most important is that you have a real interest in keeping Sun Lakes beautiful, safe, financially sound, and that you make decisions based on the best information available and in the best interests of all our residents. Is being on the Master Board always easy? No, sometimes no matter how thorough you are, or what you do to insure you have all the information needed to make a sound decision, is does not come out right. Other times after exhaustive investigations you discover unforeseen things that cause you to go back to the drawing board and start all over again. There are times you are forced to make hard decisions that will have an adverse effect on some of our residents, and they will be unhappy. I like to say that 1/3rd of the people will like your decisions, 1/3rd will hate your decisions, and the other 1/3rd will not care one way or the other. Is being on the Master Board worth it? Absolutely! In spite of what I just wrote, my experiences on the Board have been extremely rewarding and educational. Before being on the Board I felt I knew Sun Lakes pretty well. Was I surprised. Someone once said to me just after my initial election to the Board, "What you don't know, you don't know." That was so true, and I have loved every minute spent in discovering "what I did not know." When people acknowledge that you are doing your best, that is rewarding. When residents call on you for help, and you can actually help them with their problem, that is rewarding. When a hard and controversial decision has to explained to the community and they understand and accept it, that is rewarding. I have always found the rewarding moments far outweigh the hard times. If you have thought that you would like to get involved with the Master Board then go to the Administrative Office between Feb. 1 and Feb. 20, pick up the election papers, fill them out, and get into the race. It is an experience you will never forget. My second subject for this article is a personal one. As you know, Sandy and I lost a daughter to cancer a short time ago. Although we always have supported cancer research, since our loss it has taken on new meaning. Our community has a very special group of people called "Team Sun Lakes" that for years has participated in the Relay for Life cancer research fund raising program. To date, they have raised over $350,000. The actual event will be held on May 11 and 12. Over the next couple of months you will see articles in the Lifestyles, posters in the clubhouses, and hear announcements at various events. Early this month they will be having their annual kick off meeting. Please watch for the announcement and plan on attending. You will find it very rewarding to be a part of this wonderful endeavor. This is a disease that has affected many families in Sun Lakes, and this great group of people is doing everything they can to help put a stop to it. community news | sun lakes lifestyles | february 2013 | 3
