| OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2018 | 33 Yiddish Club EREV Hanukkah starts Sun., Dec. 2, at sundown and continues for eight full nights. (Ashkenazic) Hebrew: KHah-nuh-Kun. (Sephardic) Hebrew: Khah-noo-Kah Chanukah or Hanukkah is the Jewish eight days of the "Festival of Lights," celebrating with a nightly menorah lighting with family members, friends, special prayers, Chanukah songs, Dreidel games, fried foods as "Sufganya" (jelly filled doughnuts),potato Latkes, children receiving "Gelt" (coins) and a few for "Tzedakah" (charity). A nightly lighting of the Menorah holds (nine) flames. One is the "Shamash" (attendant) which is used to kindle the other eight lights. The first night we light just one flame starting from "right to left." The second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eight night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled. The Hebrew word "Chanukah" means "Dedication" named because it celebrates the rededication of the holy temple. When the seventh branch Candelabrum was discovered and a single amount of olive oil was found. The Candelabrum for a one-day supply that lasted for eight full days. Notice inside the OHCC front doors, there is a Menorah lit for all to enjoy. Sun., Dec. 2 at 11:15 am is our Chanukah Luncheon with entertainment Notable Women. Sun., Dec. 2 at 5 pm there will be a Chanukah lighting at the North County Faire. Wed., Dec. 5 at 6 pm Rabbi Greenberg from Chabad Center of Oceanside/Vista will install and light the huge Menorah at 401 Mission Ave, Oceanside (in front of the Regal Theater). This is open to the community. On Dec. 31, at midnight comes to an end for our Yiddish board. I, as President and VP Program Chairperson had an excellent working board. I would like to thank Leslie Wohl as Membership Chairperson, Stu Wohl as Treasurer, and Joann Bush as Secretary and Larine Steinman as Hospitality Chairperson. We had 60 to 70 members participating at our general meetings and Yiddish Club Luncheons/Entertainment with participation of 140 Our Yiddish board thanks you for your participation this year and may your life be filled with only happiness.
