40 | OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2018 | Billiards Club members had a unique chance to see World Champion Trick Shot Artist Florian "Venom" Kohler on Oct. 20. This 30-year-old wizard is a six-time Guinness Book world record holder and has over a billion views online. He entertained us with skill and humor, and even let some of the audience in on his act. Valiant volunteer Bette Webb let Flo balance his cue ball on a chalk cube held in her teeth for one of his trick shots, and Tom Murphy kept his composure when Flo shot a ball into a shoe (one of Charlie Payne's) positioned between Tom's legs! The Billiards Club Annual Membership Meeting and Luncheon was well attended on Oct. 25. A general meeting covering plans for the coming year and the election of the 2019 executive board followed a sit-down lunch. Charlie Payne will be President, Cal Roe will be VP of Tournaments, David Key will be VP of Instruction, Kathy Thornton will be Treasurer, and Janice Pelcher will be Secretary. The 8-Ball Club Championship Tournament followed the membership meeting and attracted an impressive 22 entrants, so the first round was a single elimination game. The 8-Ball pool game is often won by potting multiple balls in succession. To promote this feature, cash was awarded to those who could pot three or more balls in a row. One-dollar winners with three potted balls were Leo Beeloo, Marc Beardsley, Craig Cameron, Ralph DiTursi and John Carlson. Three-dollar winners with four successive balls were Ursel Jones, Dan Wilkerson, Bob Whitzel, Kathy Thornton, and Peter Fiore. Gary Pelcher and Charlie Payne both potted five balls in succession and won $6 each. The winners of the first round in the 'B' skill group were Ursel Jones, Marc Beardsley, Kathy Thornton, Craig Cameron, Leo Beeloo and Bob Whitzel. Marc, Kathy, and Bob won their second round matches and were advanced to the A-B combined matches. The winners of the 'A' skill group were Peter Fiore, Gary Pelcher, Ralph DiTursi, Roydn Jones, and Charlie Payne. Gary, Ralph and Charlie won their second round matches and moved on to the A-B combined matches. 'B' players were given a 3-ball handicap when playing an 'A' player. This meant the 'A' players had seven balls to pot before attacking the 8-ball, and the 'B' players had four. Billiards Club President Charlie Payne shared this story: One of our popular pool games is "Golf." You must sink "your" ball in all six pockets, in order. If you make too many mistakes, you go back a hole (pocket), even to negative holes. If you make an unfathomable number of egregious errors, you can go back to five holes, which has been the record for a long time. Until a few days ago, when the intrepid Don Farmer managed to go backward SIX holes, thus returning to the first hole and establishing a new record for futility. He now needed 12 holes to win. Other players needed only two holes at that point, so it was hopeless for Don, but he did not give up. He made a hole. And another. And a couple more. In fact, he went all around the table, back once again to the beginning, needing "only" another six holes to win. Other players were shooting for the last hole, so it was hopeless, but Don persevered. He made a hole. And another. And, in fact, Don won the damn game! Greatest comeback in modern sports history. Congratulate him when you see him. For more information about the Billiards Club, visit our website at http://ohccbilliards.wixsite.com/billiardsclub. Billiards 8-Ball Club Championship Tournament Final Match players L to R: Gary Pelcher (3rd), Ralph DiTursi (2nd), Charlie Payne (1st place Champion) and Marc Beardsley (4th).
