26 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2019 |
Yiddish Culture Club
The Yiddish Culture Club will
celebrate Valentine's Day at our Wed.,
Feb. 13 meeting in the Main Clubhouse
Ballroom at 7 pm with the showing
of one of the funniest films of our
times, Biloxi Blues, written by author
and playwright Neil Simon. Known
for plays that deal with the human
comedy, he was one of the most
prolific Jewish writers of the twentieth
century and is particularly known for
his plays, many of which became films
and television series, such as Barefoot
in the Park, Prisoner of Second Avenue,
The Sunshine Boys, The Odd Couple,
and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Biloxi
Blues, the second film in a trilogy, is
based on Simon's stint in Boot Camp
during WWII and features a talented
cast led by Matthew Broderick, as
Simon, and Christopher Walken,as a
slightly insane drill sergeant. Directed by Mike Nichols, the casting
is perfect for the story which has a very interesting perspective
into seldom told experiences of World War II. Bring lots of tissues!
The story delivers laugh after laugh
while maintaining the seriousness of
the realities these boys had to deal
with: loss of innocence, unexpected
surprises about culture, and New
England boys in the Mississippi Delta
makes the perfect Simon film. Great
example of taking a play and making
it into a film.
Everyone is welcome to attend. No
reservations are necessary and there
is no charge to Yiddish Club members,
but non-member guests will be
charged $3 pp. As usual coffee and
cake will be served. Hope to see you
there for this film. Laughter is always
good for all and there will be much of
it.
We also want to remind you that
the YCC has a lending library of DVD
films which we loan out to any Sun
Lakes resident. The person to contact is Claudia Schwartz. Her
phone number is listed in the Sun Lakes phone book.
