8 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2019 | Can you help someone in case of a medical emergency? Do you know how to immobilize a broken bone, or stop a wound from bleeding? Knowing how to do these things and more will be facilitated by EPAP in a series of Red Cross First-Aid Classes in the next few months. The classes are open to all residents, and will be taught by Sun Laker Linda Myers-Kalb, RN, who is an American Red Cross Certified First-Aid Instructor. Myers-Kalb, a nurse for over 50 years, is currently a wound care coordinator/consultant at San Gorgonio Hospital. She taught classes for the ARC in Okinawa, and trained many others others as Certified ARC Instructors. "Most people don't know how to administer basic first-aid," she said, "or they're afraid to be wrong. We need people to be prepared for emergencies, and to give back to their community." First-Aid classes are six hours long, and will be held twice a month during February, March, April, and May. There are two types — one six-hour class offered on Wednesday, or two three-hour classes offered on Tuesday and Thursday. Classes will be held in the EPAP Operations Center. Topics to be covered include bleeding, choking, use of splints, etc. The emphasis is on basic first-aid. There is no written test. "We want to make people more comfortable to help each other, neighbor to neighbor," said MarySue Caron, RN, EPAP's Associate Director of Medical Rescue Teams. "We need more volunteers for our District MRTs, and we want them to understand that nurses and doctors are not the only ones who can help in emergencies." Each class will be limited to 10 participants. The cost is $5 at the door for training materials, and approximately $20 to the American Red Cross for your certification card at the successful completion of the training. Classes will begin Feb 5 and 7. To register, or for more information, contact Linda Myers-Kalb at (951) 529-9087. EPAP: AMERICAN RED CROSS FIRST-AID CERTIFICATION TRAINING OFFERED
