34 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2019 | Pet Lovers Club president, Ellen Kippel, reports that we had a great turnout for Do Dues Day. We have 29 new members and 189 renewals, bringing our total to 218. It is never too late to join. It is only $6 a year for individuals and $10 per family. The front desk has an envelope for the Pet Lovers Club, where you can fill out the information form and drop in your checks. Protect your Valentine chocolates from predatory pooches. Three hours on Christmas Eve night at the 24-hour Emergency Vet was not part of the plan, but that's what happened when an OHCC member's small dog jumped onto a chair, then to the dining room table, and tore open a wrapped gift box of dark chocolates. She normally did not even have chocolates in the house, and the dog did not normally jump onto the table, so she was not worried when she went out to unload the car. Even though the pooch had time to eat just four chocolates, the vet said to bring her in as soon as possible, where they made the dog involuntarily give back the candies. Had the event occurred during the night when the owner was asleep, the dog might have eaten the whole box and might not have survived. Consider putting this information on your speed-dial for 24-hour veterinary emergencies: (It is off Melrose, about 15 minutes from here.) California Veterinary Specialists, 2310 Faraday, Carlsbad. (760) 431-2273 Ellen informs us that the San Diego Humane Society will be on campus Sun., June 2, from 9 am to 12 pm with the following activities: • Ask the Trainer - One of the Humane Society trainers will be available to chat with the residents about their dogs • Licensing – they will renew/issue license tags to the resident's dogs that have had their rabies shot; as long as they have their rabies certificate with them • Microchipping – they will offer $15 microchips for dog and cats • Information booth to share Humane Society programs and resources they offer The Humane Society will not be able to offer a vaccine clinic due to their medical department's tight schedule to work with the animals in the shelter. She is working with a local vet to provide low-cost rabies shots. Please let her know if you will need to get a rabies shot for your dog so we can see if it is worth having this service available. Since we are doing the above activities, it might be best if a rescue group, rather than the Humane Society, came to do pet adoptions. If Ellen gets a positive response that people want pet adoptions, she will contact various rescue groups to see their availability on June 2. We will have a member of the photography club available to take pictures of pets with their humans. In 2018, the Village Vets had a miniature horse trained to support vets with PTSD. Since many residents could not attend the Village Vets meeting, Ellen has arranged for at least one - and maybe two - horse trainers and horses to come to our June event. We are trying to get other local vendors to participate in the event. Pet Lovers Club
