| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2019 | 15 The Travel Club is very excited about the events we are planning for 2019 – informative programs at meetings and exciting trips. There will not be a meeting in February. The next Club meeting will be held on March 11, at 6:30 pm in Abravanel Hall. We are pleased to announce the following trips. If you are interested in any of these trips, please sign up quickly, as many of our trips sell out fast. Tues., Feb. 19 – Tour of the Salk Institute and the Birch Aquarium, $100. The Salk Institute was established in 1960 by Jonas Salk, MD, developer of the first safe and effective polio vaccine. The architect, Louis Kahn, designed two mirror-image structures — each six stories tall — that flank a grand travertine courtyard. The Birch Aquarium features more than 5,000 fish in over 60 aquarium habitats. Lunch will be at the "Spot." Heidi Boynton coordinates this trip. (760) 295-8990. Tues., March 19 – The Dr. Phil Show, $58. Be in the audience for a taping of the Dr. Phil Show at the Paramount Studios. Dr. Phil recently achieved a milestone by attaining 100 straight weeks (with two ties) as syndication's top talker. After the show, lunch will be on your own at the Farmer's Market/the Grove. Susan Shaw (sueshaw48@hotmail.com) coordinates this trip Fri., April 12 – Art Alive Exhibit at The San Diego Museum of Art, $70. Art Alive 2019 at The San Diego Museum of Art celebrates its 38th year and stunning works of art are on display in the Museum with more than 100 floral interpretations created by top local and national designers. Lunch is on your own. Susan Shaw (sueshaw48@hotmail. com) coordinates this trip. Tues., Aug. 6 - Pageant of the Masters (SOLD OUT – Wait List Only). Monthly newsletters and detailed flyers on all trips sponsored by the Travel Club are located in the trip racks at the Clubhouse or on the Travel Club website at ohccdg.wixsite.com/travelclub. If you are a Travel Club member, you will receive all information via email on a monthly basis. Travel Club 2018 in review: Do Dues Day found the Wine Tasting Club had gained more than 50 new members and of course lost a few who moved on or out of the area, most members joined for another year. The Club has ten groups, which independently hold monthly wine tasting events. Most events are in private homes but also include off campus events to visit wineries, hold tastings on the beach (where allowed), and one group took a private cruise in San Diego Bay during their tasting event. Many members independently attended wine-maker dinners offered at local restaurants. Our summer party was a great success under the leadership of Tim Rogers and many volunteers from Groups 5 & 6. They filled the Lanai with people, laughter, conversation, dancing, lots of food, and as you probably guessed, wine. The annual Wine Club meeting to elect our Board of Directors featured an entertaining and informative talk by D.D. Smith, our resident wine expert, but overall the meeting was short and sweet leaving time to enjoy the wines, food and conversations. The 2018 Wine Club Board organized the winter party hosting about 200 members for dinner and dancing. As people arrived dressed in their evening finery, their picture was taken (thanks Patti Smith!) in front of the decorated tree in the lobby, then on to the party for a great time. Our best estimate is that during 2018, among the almost 400 club members, between 2,200 to 3,000 bottles of wine were sacrificed to our serious monthly tasting activities. (Note: At this writing, we have no information on the amount of beer consumed, but…many local breweries were visited.) 2018 was a good year, so much so, that we are going to do it again in 2019!
