| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2019 | 41 The Billiards Club has gotten off to a great start this year. Last month's open house provided information on how the Billiards Room functions as well as demonstrations of pool skills. Members have already enjoyed three lessons designed to launch new players and give experienced players a refresher course in the basics. It is not too late to get in on some of the best learning opportunities of our Club year. On Feb. 7, Billiards Club President Charlie Payne will conclude his Basic Lesson series with a session on "Position." "Controlling where the cue ball goes," says Charlie, "is the most important pool skill you can have." All of our basic lessons are available on the Billiards Club website at http://ohccbilliards. wixsite.com/billiardsclub. A Mixer Lesson on Feb. 14, will give members an opportunity to learn and play three games: 8-Ball, Cutthroat, and Golf. For each game, a short lesson will follow by 20 minutes of partner play. Then partners will split and move on to the next game at another table. This should be a fun way to be acquainted with Billiards Club members while learning three of our most popular games. Our Professional Seminar on Feb. 28, is an exceptional opportunity to see a real professional put it all together in a single session, everything clearly explained and demonstrated. Professional pool player and straight pool champion (with a high run of 257!) Calvin Coker will cover stance, grip, bridge, stroke, and the pre-shot routine. Calvin is not only a professional pool player, but also a professional singer. For three years, he was a principal singer in the MGM Grand's headline show of Jubilee! in Las Vegas, and he still sings professionally. As you can see in the above photo (with his wife Christi), he cleans up pretty well for his singing gigs. It may be that Charlie also sings. Here he appears ready to burst into song in the middle of one of his lessons. Billiards Thanks to the members who volunteered for Do Dues Day. We added 54 new members with about 137 renewals. The Hike planning meeting was held Jan. 23 the new schedule and any updated information would be posted on the web at: www.ohwh-club.com/walkers-hikers/ schedule sometime this month. We are asking more volunteers to lead the hikes. It does not entail major work I will still send out hike announcement emails before the date of the scheduled hike. The Hike Master usually picks the restaurant, prepared directions to hike and lunch, and has maps made and copied at the clubhouse. Bill Nupp has been kind enough for many years to be the Hike Master, please volunteer. We walk and hike every two weeks on alternating Thursdays and Fridays. The walk is typically 1.5 to 2 miles on relatively level terrain. The hike is usually 3.5 to 4.5 miles with 200 to 500 feet of elevation gain. After the hike, we go to lunch together. For each hike, we meet at 8:30 am in the overflow parking lot by the clubhouse and carpool to and from the hike. Passengers give the driver some cash for gas. Always bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes. Walkers and Hikers
