40 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2019 | Our Kumu, Iolana Kaimikaua, extended an invitation for us to fly to Hawaii for a workshop. Last month, a group of us flew to Honolulu to attend a week-long workshop at her home. We learned new dances and she focused on improving our technique so that we could become better Hawaiian dancers. After spending a week getting to know us, she gave each of us our own Hawaiian name. Our Kumu also took us to Waikiki to a muu muu shop where the local performing and competition groups shop for their Hawaiian dresses. We purchased the new dresses you see in the picture at right. After working hard every day at our workshop, we took some time off to have some fun and attended two luaus, did some sightseeing and, of course, we shopped. Two members of our group, Lisa Chan and Joan Lau extended their vacation for a few more days and took ukulele lessons from our Kumu's husband, Charles Kaimikaua, Jr. who is a master ukulele and Slack Key Artist. They came home more knowledgeable of how to play chords and how to strum a ukulele just like all his students learn in his classes. They also had an opportunity to accompany him while he played his ukulele. The week flew by and before we knew it, it was time to say Aloha. It was an unforgettable week and we look forward to returning to Hawaii again for another workshop. We are also thrilled that both she and her husband will perform in our Hawaiian show on June 30.
