Our club had an outstanding Activities Day in mid-January. Dozens of interested residents dropped by and were greeted by a contingent of club officers and members. Many signed up expressing a desire to learn more about the game. We have been in the process of contacting over 30 folks! The plan has been to arrange "clinics," or informal get-togethers where the sport can be explained, demonstrated and tried. These gatherings will continue into spring to accommodate all who wish to participate. There is no charge and equipment is available to loan until a person decides whether pickleball is for them. If you are interested in such a session, give our Secretary Jim Hodgson a call at (951) 845-4286. Another fine way to get an introduction to the sport is to sign in to the Pickleball Channel. It is not a television program, it's a diverse website that features articles, instruction and videos that highlight this fast-growing recreational activity. You may access this free site via www.pickleballchannel.com. At this writing, a fun video was prominently promoted showing the "Top 10 Most Amazing Pickleball Plays from Pickleball Channel." Some of the action is truly astounding but don't in any way expect to see such prowess on Sun Lakes' courts! We aren't pros. We are a bunch of active seniors who enjoy friendly competition and the small court offers a remarkable amount of exercise. There is no wonder this game has captivated millions of players. Pickle may be enjoyed by all skill levels and ages. The key is to play with folks who are compatible with your levels of experience and mobility. Our club offers the chance to meet and connect people of similar capabilities. The chance to play "above your grade" once in awhile is a great way to improve and we can fit you in to the best combinations of players. In short, we are all about fun and friendships. So if you are looking for a way to get a workout combined with a little gentle competition, give pickle a try! Our club's sanctioned play hours are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 8 to 10 am. We also play afternoons and evenings, weather permitting. We share the three courts with POP Tennis but play is open to "first-come, first-served" during the non-club hours. If you want more information, call our President, Leslie Johnson at (909) 693-9922 or VP Tony Browne at (909) 509- 0105. See you on the courts! | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2019 | 53 Pickleball Club
