| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2019 | 7 By Joe Formino, Chairman, District Delegate Assembly Sun Lakers are doing it again. They are answering a call for help, as they have done so many times in the past. Here is the story: Years ago the Sun Lakes Charitable Trust added to its list of grants, funds for scholarships for needy students at Mt. San Jacinto College. As our available funds grew so did our list of students. At the present time we have granted funds to six students, four are graduating in May of this year. Three of the five women are mothers with two or three children. We all feel proud of where our charity money goes to help others, particularly to help build lives and families. During the early part of 2018 the program was discussed at the District Delegate Assembly meeting. A couple of the Delegates, Bob Allbaugh, District 23, and Frank DiNucci, District 7, offered to donate funds to the program. The Board of Directors of the Charitable Trust decided to explore the inclusion of the Assembly's participation in the program. At this time, there are seven Districts who have donated funds; Districts 2, 5, 7, 10, 11, 18, 23. Their contributions have totaled almost $5,000 during 2018. There is one notable story that must be told. I received a phone call from District 10 Delegate, Peggy Ritter, advising a resident would like to discuss a donation to the program. We have never contacted nor discussed our program directly with any resident. The resident was visited and this is our explanation of the program. We have developed a list of criteria the students must satisfy. We review all of the selected students and decide who is to be granted funds. The list is provided to us by the Mt. San Jacinto College Foundation Board of Directors and the Director and Counselor of the San Gorgonio Pass Campus. That is what the campus in Banning is named. By the way, the Mt. San Jacinto College began in Banning in 1963, but moved to San Jacinto because a large tract of land was donated to begin the campus there. The happy ending of our visit; the resident gave us a donation of $2,000 to the Scholarship Fund. Obviously, this heartfelt donation, together with the others from the Districts, will allow us to extend our program and assist more needy students. Our conclusion has to be that we sincerely hope the desire to help others will move this program forward. There are a lot of other students who need assistance to raise themselves out of poverty and into the productive area of employment. I'm betting Sun Lakers will be the movers! District Delegate Assembly Report Things are well underway with the planning of 2019 Charity Week events. The "Fab '60s" theme is already helping the individual committees conjure up some really fun ideas. The Monday night Happy Hour will feature fun 60s' clothing and accessories like tie-dyed tee shirts. Pick up some groovy stuff for very little bread to wear during the week. The Fashion Show is entitled "Surf City USA," lending itself to beach and cruise wear. A popular boutique out of Palm Springs will be presenting the fashions for the first time at our event. It promises to be something new and different. The theme for the Friday night gala is "The Music that Changed the World." The committee is working on a lot of great entertainment for the night. And don't forget the Pancake Breakfast, Putting Event, Monster Scramble, Golf Cart Rally, Shoot- Out and Sunday Pro Am followed by the Silent Auction. So much fun crammed into one week! Watch your mailbox in April for the Helicopter Ball Drop and Raffle tickets. The finalized schedule of events, and individual flyers will also be out in April. They will be available on the Sun Lakes website for you to download at your convenience. Sun Lakes Life and Channel 97 are also great sources of information and will be updated regularly. The organizers are still looking for volunteers to help out in a lot of areas before and during the events. If you would like to help, please contact Beverly Simmons at (909) 996-8569. Music that changed the world… Can you dig it?
