With the recent rains, homeowners should have turned off their irrigation. As this article is being written, more rain is in the forecast. It is simply amazing to still see that some folks are still watering on a daily basis when it is raining. The soil in this community is primarily clay and overwatering is not only costly but wasteful. Drainage of clay soil is very slow and when rain water is added to a regular daily watering cycle, plant roots will drown as they sit in water below the surface. Over-watered plants are much more susceptible to pests, bacterial diseases and fungal infections. Root, crown and stem rots occur when over-watered plants become infected by fungal pathogens. When the over-watered plant develops rot, the foliage begins to dull and turn yellow and the plant will eventually die. Proper watering can help prevent future problems. Refrain from following a set schedule during our cooler weather and during our rainy season. The rule of thumb: water only when it's needed and keep in mind that too much water is as harmful to plants as not getting enough. Just a reminder about requests for tree removals. Messy is not a reason to request removal and it will almost certainly be denied at the committee level. It is recognized that some, in fact many, trees are messy, but they add to the beauty of our community and are considered to be an asset. That said, there may be a time and a good reason to make a request for a tree to be removed and the Landscape Committee will always consider that request. In general, we want to keep the trees we have and, as the committee undertook extensive enhancement of our landscaping, more trees were added. 12 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | March 2019 | Hello Herald readers, welcome to March's issue and the Bistro's input. I hope you and your Valentine enjoyed Francisco's special menu on Feb. 14. For now, we can stow away the romantic reds of Valentine's Day and haul out the glorious greens because St. Patrick's Day always happens on March 17. Francisco will be serving his tasty and traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner; however you will have to bring your own "green beer." Other March happenings, Mardi Gras will be celebrated on March 5 with lots of colors, beads and music. The next day, March 6, is Ash Wednesday when we offer homage and promises of giving up something for Lent. The Plaza will be put to good use on the March 26 as the Shades of Sound band will entertain us and keep us dancing. At this time I don't know of any food specials for these events, but watch for a news blast, just in case. Our second Sunday of the Month Brunch falls on March 10, which is also the day we lose an hour sleep because of time change! I have a big dislike for this time change but I will still be there enjoying the brunch because I wouldn't want to miss one of Francisco fantastic omelets along with all the other good stuff on the buffet! Another good thing about this March is that there is a fifth Friday which means an extra Friday night with Francisco's serving his Western Style Buffet, usually ribs, chicken, corn on the cob, beans and corn bread and some kind of dessert is included. The Once Again Band is not available for music this month, but they will be tuning up for the last day of May which is the fifth Friday. So mark your calendar. Where else can you get a meal with all the trimmings plus live music for so little money? The lucky winner for the Sunday Brunch for two is Larry and Sandy Iannotti. During a short reprieve from the rain I snapped their photo (inset) while the sun was out. The ticket was drawn by Jim Hatcher on Jan. 23 at the Board of Directors meeting. But of course you already know that, and some other interesting stuff, if you were at the meeting. One coupon per address each month, (extra applications are removed from the drawing). The day before the BOD meeting the last of the entry forms are collected for that month's drawing. The not- drawn entries each month, are disposed of and a whole new accumulation starts for the next month's drawing. I am sure most of you are aware of the new law about straws. The wait staff can carry them in their pocket, but can only hand them out when or if you request them for your drink. For now, that's me, Patt, double "T" Bistro Committee Name: ___________________________________________________________________________________ Address: _________________________________________________________________________________ Phone: ___________________________________________________________________________________ FREE SUNDAY BRUNCH for 2 at the Bistro at Four Seasons (not valid on holidays or special events) March 2019 Hemet Herald • Limited to ONE ENTRY per residence per month Landscape Committee
