30 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | March 2019 | From the President – Tom Moore: This month I'd like to talk about our club's role in the community. Our annual Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Aug. 6 this year. Your board has always chosen a local group to support. For example, the Police Department, Fire Department, Sunshine Club, and Valley Restart are just a few of the worthy groups that we have supported in the past. This event has grown every year, and now we raise well over $3,000 for the cause, and it's getting more and more difficult to choose which group to help. I believe the time has come for the general membership (that's YOU!) to participate in deciding who we will support. Therefore, during our General Membership meeting (to be held immediately after golf on March 19), I will open the floor for recommendations. I hope to have two or three accredited charities to choose from, and we will have a vote (by a show of hands) to determine this years' beneficiary of our efforts. While I'm on the subject of community involvement, I'd like to recommend another highly satisfying endeavor that we can all do: Volunteering as a Marshal at a professional golf tournament! There are three great tournaments in our area every year that we have worked; "The Desert Classic" in Palm Springs (formerly the Bob Hope), "The Farmers Insurance Open" in Torrey Pines (formerly the San Diego Open), and my favorite, and the first major LPGA tournament of 2019, "The ANA Inspiration" (formerly the Dinah Shore Classic) in Palm Springs on April 1 - 7. This year you can sign up to volunteer right up to March 20 at their web site: www.anainspiration.com. I know that a lot of you have marshalled in the past, but it seems that these events are suffering a severe drop in the number volunteers, and more help is needed. Think about it — it's a BLAST! One more thing: Over the past year Bill Hissam has done a great job as our liaison with the Grandfathers for Golf group. He is anticipating a move soon, and we need a new representative. I know that Bill has set a very high standard, but we need someone to step up and take over. The only requirement is that the candidate should have a pick-up truck to haul the donated clubs, balls, etc. to the Grandfathers' headquarters every once in a while. From the Tournament Chair – Addis Scott: You may sign up at our prior Tuesday golf event or contact the Tournament Committee by email at hemet4sgc@gmail.com. Our March 2019 Game Schedule is: March 5 at 8 am: (T) – Low Net / Low Gross – Post as Tournament March 12 at 8 am: Teams: Scramble - (St. Pattie's Day Celebration- wear GREEN) March 19 at 8 am: Partners: Best Net Score Per Hole March 26 at 8 am: Individual: Low Net by Flight From the Handicap Chair – Melody Lewis: Back To Basics - Handicapping 101 The Significance of Score Types Q: When you are posting a score, what exactly does home, away or tournament mean? And what is a type C or P score? Do score types make a difference to your handicap? A: The Score Types with letters H (Home) and A (Away) are just designed to make it easier for you to post your score, and easier for your fellow members and Handicap Committee to recognize those particular scores. They have no special impact on your Handicap Index calculation. A type C score is two nine-hole scores combined into an 18-hole score. The nine-hole scores are combined in the order in which they reach GHIN and are posted with the date of the second nine. In the combining of two nines into 18-hole scores, the Course Ratings are added together, and the Slope Ratings are added and divided by two. The T (Tournament) score is the one score type that can have an impact on your Handicap Index. Tournament rounds, if they are very low, have the potential to have an impact on your handicap even after they have cycled their way out of your 20 most recent rounds. The Committee in charge of conducting the event decides in advance if the T is worthy to be applied or not. T scores are intended for significant events, like club Championships, for example, and not routine weekly or monthly events or ones that do not carry special importance. P scores can only be applied by a club's Handicap Committee and indicate a Penalty score. Penalty scores are not par – such as 72 – as many people might think. A Penalty score can be a low penalty or a high penalty and are relational to the individual player's scoring record. A Handicap Committee would add a penalty score for reason of failure by the player to post scores, and it is not necessary for the Committee to inform the player they are doing so. Any questions or concerns feel free to contact me. From the Membership Chair – Elliot Yaeger: Membership to the club is still available at any time throughout the year. We have tournaments every Tuesday throughout the year including individual play as well as team play. Tee times are 7:30 am from April through September and 8 am from October through March. Applications can be picked up at the Lodge front desk at any time. Membership is $66 and includes Club as well as SCGA Membership. Our membership is now 123, so come on out and meet some new friends. If further assistance is needed contact me at (951) 223-3735 or email me at ey1611@gmail.com. I encourage all to join and enjoy Tuesday's play as well as all social functions. From the Rules Chair – Tom Johnson: The new rules are interesting. If the ball on the green is moved by the wind or just starts rolling down a slope, it is to be played where it winds up. Once the ball has been marked on the green, and it is moved for any reason, you must replace it where it was marked. Instead of hazards and water hazards, we know call them penalty areas. In a penalty area you can now ground your club, but don't be confused with a bunker where you still cannot ground your club. Now if you accidently move your ball when searching, no penalty, just replace it where it was. Before this year, if you hit the ball more than once on a stroke, there was a penalty, and now there no longer is a penalty. Hopefully you are finding it easy to adjust to the new rules. Going through the new "Rules of Golf " will help you to understand the new rules. Please ask if you need a copy of the new "Rules of Golf."
