They are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom… ~ Marcel Proust April showers bring May flowers. April is Aphrodite's Month. April's name is derived from the Latin word aperit, which means to open. It is considered that April is the month of the growing season, when trees and flowers begin to "open." They tell us the weather begins to improve in April and that April is the month stepping into spring. The plants in your garden should be putting on lots of new growth, so if you have any perennials to lift and divide, or new ones to plant, do so as early in April as possible to allow them the maximum time to settle in. Start feeding established perennials now with a general fertilizer. This is the perfect time to try some seasonal planting, this will help you to uncover the perfect arrangement of flowers by month ensuring a glorious garden year-round. Why not be adventurous and try planting some of the most breathtaking flowers in season such as: Sweet Peas with their delicate petals, Peonies with their fragrant clusters, Stock flowers or Gilly flowers with bunches of spicy flowers atop a stem, Tweedia with its star shaped flowers and hints of lavender, the ever popular Tulips, Irises and Ranunculus with their multitude of colors and sweet fragrance. Let us not forget the lovely scent of Freesia and the sweet scented Gardenias. And Cymbidium with its lovely five pointed flowers and the beloved rose. Be bold in the garden! After all, when was the last time you did something for the first TIME? April's topic is Feng Shui in the garden, brought to us by Sun Lakes very own Beverly Simmons. The intent of Feng Shui is to bring one into harmony with nature and its natural flow. Beverly Simmons began studying Feng Shui several years ago when working with clients to downsize and organize. She helped them discover and work with the energy flow within their space, using traditional and western Feng Shui tools to enhance their environment and enrich their lives. She will share these tools with us along with practical, hands-on applications during her presentation. Come and join us April 17, in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom at 10 am. Remember, you don't have to be a gardener to join. For membership contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101.
