46 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2019 "Goodbye Africa!" Residents are invited to join a special event on Monday, April 1, at 6 pm in The Lodge. Internationally known speaker, Dr. Terry Tucker, who was awarded the prestigious title "Fulbright Professor" by the State Department, will share her journey from the corporate boardroom to the jungles of Africa. "General Fox noticed my work while I was serving others and I was asked to join President Barack Obama's diplomatic initiatives abroad." Dr. Tucker currently spends six months of the year traveling to other countries providing help and conducting medical clinics in places as diverse as the jungles of Cambodia and the Bedouin of Jordan. During her most recent trip to Africa, she traveled to Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Dr. Tucker served and developed graduate programs at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. There is no way to sugar coat the horrible conditions at Mulago Hospital in Kampala. It's a large public hospital that serves the poor and destitute who cannot afford to pay for medical care. It is also a teaching hospital for the Makerere College of Health Science. The health conditions of the hospital are deplorable: poor sanitation, minimal equipment and supplies (no gloves, no bandages, no masks, and no gowns for the patients), rampant infectious disease, high infant and maternal mortality, and prevalent HIV/AIDS. Nursing care is so sparse; relatives of the patients have to assist with basic health-care needs. These family members can be seen sitting and sleeping on the hospital lawn when not tending to their loved one. This is quite an experience for Dr. Tucker to share with us so you won't want to miss this special occasion! Reminder: There is a mandatory participants' meeting Thursday, April 4, at 6 pm in the RCN building for those interested in presenting their spoken word at the "Wine and Words" event next month. Your entries should be no more than 600 words as you will only be permitted to speak a maximum of three minutes. There is no cost to participate. Upcoming events: April 28 – Wine and Words; June 19 – Juneteenth Celebration; Dec. 14 – AACC Christmas Gala The AACC meets the first Monday of each month in The Lodge Game Room at 6 pm.
