32 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | May 2019 | From the President – Tom Moore: Geez, is it May already?! What happened to April? Summer is just around the corner, and that means no more "frost delays" or "cart path only" days. It's time to put away the thermal underwear, ear muffs, mittens, heavy jackets, and hand warmers and dust off the golf sandals, shorts, fans, water misters, and ice packs. This is the time of year when we trade frostbite for bug bites. After much discussion and a very close vote, it was decided during our March general meeting that we would use this year's charity fundraiser to support the Tahquitz High School Boys and Girls Golf Teams. Since all three candidates were so well represented, the club membership voted to support all three. This year we will support the Tahquitz High School Boys and Girls Golf Teams, the beneficiary in 2020 will be The Hemet Police Department's K-9 program, and in 2021 we will donate the proceeds to The Assistance League. A huge "thank you" to the three advocates, Mr. Gary Sopata (Tahquitz High School), City Councilman Russ Brown (the Hemet Police Department's K-9 program), and Mrs. Linda Morriss (The Assistance League). All three made compelling arguments for their respective groups. We hope to see a great turn-out for the tournament on Aug. 6. This is always a fun event! May is the time to celebrate all that we love about our little community, but May also brings us Memorial Day. Please take a moment to look up to the cross on the hill to our Northeast and remember those golf club friends that are no longer with us. Until next month, "Stay out of the penalty areas!" and "Hit 'em straight." From the Tournament Chair – Addis Scott: From the Tournament Committee: You may sign up at our prior Tuesday golf event or contact the Tournament Committee by email at hemet4sgc@gmail.com Our May 2019 Game Schedule is: May 7 at 7:30 am - Team: Two Best Net Scores Per Hole. May 14 at 7:30 am - (T) Memorial Tournament – Eclectic Round-1 – Post as Tournament May 16 at 7:30 am - Thursday (T) Memorial Tournament – Eclectic Round-2 – Post as Tournament May 21 at 7:30 am - Team: Stableford-Scramble May 28 at 7:30 am - Individual: Blind Draw Game at End of Round From the Handicap Chair – Melody Lewis: Golf Handicap Truths: Bad Scores Don't Matter In wishing about the direction of your handicap there are two kinds of golfers: 1) The ones who want their handicap to go down to show how good they are and 2) the ones who want their handicap to go up to have a greater advantage when competing. In both cases it is important to understand what impacts the golf handicap. The USGA handicap system intents to calculate the potential ability of the golfer and not the average ability like many believe. Therefore, it only considers the best 10 scores of the last 20 rounds. Then it averages those 10 rounds and after multiplying by 96% you get your handicap. So, if it only considers the 10 best scores out of the last 20 rounds, what happens with your other 10 rounds? Nothing. Those rounds are not even considered. So, if your tenth best score is a 98, it doesn't matter if you played 99 or 140. It won't do anything to your index. The logic, like we explained before is that to get the potential ability you want to consider only the best rounds. Also, bad rounds are very erratic, but good rounds are fairly stable, which makes it more predictable. From the Membership Chair – Elliot Yaeger: Hemet 4 Seasons Golf Club membership is holding at 123. It is never too late to join. Just stop by the front desk at The Lodge and pick up an application. Complete the application and return it to the Lodge with a check for $66. This will include membership to the club as well as membership to the SCGA, who will provide you with an official bi-monthly handicap. We have tournaments every Tuesday throughout the year, including individual play as well as team play. Tee times are now 7:30 am. I encourage you to join so that you may also enjoy the camaraderie and fun of playing with great members as I do. Some of our snowbirds have now left for home, I wish them a safe trip and look forward to playing again with you next year. For more information contact Elliot Yaeger at ey1611@gmail.com or (951) 223-3735. From the Rules Chair – Tom Johnson: Golf Tips from: Kati Biszantz, Instructor at 4 Seasons/Hemet GC (951) 304.0442. 1) You can now take your ball out of the bunker on line with the flag, but it is a two-stroke penalty. Way better than when you had to go back to its original spot with a one stroke penalty or worse yet, drop it in the bunker either two clubs away or on line with the flag - still one stroke. It could embed (if there was sand) or, if the sand is like concrete, you still can't get it out and have a lot of choice words. 2) If your ball is OB you can now drop between where you think it went out and the fairway with a two-stroke penalty. Previously if you were playing the correct rule, you had to go back to the original position (or hit a Provisional Ball) and take another stroke. Way faster, way easier now. 3) You can now repair ANYTHING on your line of putt. Hopefully no one is making a trench to the hole, which is not in the spirit of the game, but it allows for fixing those nasty marks your playing partners left when they walked on your line.
