64 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2019 | Friends we will miss Theresa Marie Campbell passed away on March 12, 2019 at age 85. She was born in Hamtramack, Michigan May 13, 1933. She was the beloved wife of 64 years to Jerry Campbell, mother of five children, grandmother of 10, and three great- grandchildren. She was a member of St. Kateri Church, the Paisano Club, Friendship Club, Dinner Dance Club, Bocce Ball, the bridge players, strength training class, RV club, California Retired Teachers, and many more. Theresa grew up in Hamtramack and Dearborn, Michigan where she was very active in choir and fashion design. She designed and sewed her own clothes throughout high school and college. She attended Michigan State University, to earn a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture and Applied Science-(Home Economics) in 1955. She met and married Jerry there in 1954. After graduation, they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan near Jerry's parents. Jerry, after a brief stint in the army, partnered with his father in the management of their bakery and Theresa became a mother with her first child, Mary Sue. Then there was Lilly, Jerri Lynn, Stewart, and Marguerite. She designed and sewed many of her childrens' clothes as well as her own when time permitted. As the kids grew, the economy changed and Theresa headed into the work force as a waitress which she had done to put herself through college. While serving at one of the pricey restaurants, she had a conversation with an old school chum who was working in the city school district office and she was able to start teaching the next fall 1970, as a Home Economics teacher which she continued to do until June 1998, even after moving to California in 1975. She earned her Master's degree in Education in 1972. She retired from Anaheim High School district June 1998 and they moved to Sun Lakes March 2002. She had a passion for dancing and skiing and did both as long as she was able. She had a tailoring and sewing business from which she used all her proceeds to buy birthday gifts for her children and grandchildren. She loved to travel. Theresa and Jerry went to Italy two times, enjoyed several cruises, and camping with the RV club. She fought a dual battle of rheumatoid arthritis and congestive heart failure, but in the end her heart was too weak. She was a lively, feisty lady and will be sorely missed. Johnnie Lewis Whittaker He enlisted in the Air Force and met his wife of 64 years, Joan, while stationed at Mather Air Force Base near Sacramento, CA. After discharge they moved to Baton Rouge, LA so he could continue his education where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from LSU. Johnnie started work in 1957 at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica as an Electrical Engineer and retired in 1995 as Director of Avionics spending 38 years at Douglas Aircraft which became McDonnell-Douglas and then later Boeing Corporation. He wrote a computer program for the International Space Station and made several solar eclipse flights with astronaut Scott Carpenter and other astronauts. His grandson Bobby got him interested in golf and after he retired to Sun Lakes Country Club in 1995 he was an avid golfer and served as the President of the Men's Sun Lakes Golf Club and was a member of The Friendship Club, Ballroom Dinner Dance Club and Couples Golf Club. He also was an avocado farmer in Rancho California, gold dredger in Northern California, boater having his own boat, certified senior scuba diver diving the Great Barrier Reef in Figi, and tennis player winning the McDonnell-Douglas Tennis Club singles and doubles trophies. He and Joan had three sons, Doug, David, Danny (deceased), and a daughter Debbie. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be missed by all.
