| OHCC LIVING | MAY 2019 | 43 Swim & Wellness For the last 10 years, I have been enjoying our golf course, including the various varieties of choices (format, open, mixed, etc.) but also on many of the North County off site venues. One of my favorites is the Touring Amateurs because it gives us all an opportunity to play long(er) courses all over the county! This is also an opportunity to play in different foursomes if you desire to play with golfers that you might not otherwise meet. My intent is to give some perspective on the history of the Touring Amateurs because I'll bet that not many people living here know what the origins really are. We are fortunate to still have several of the founders of the community who were instrumental in the establishment of the golf club initially. They established the various sub-categories of golf (Men's and Women's League, Touring Amateurs, Niners and Match Play both open and using club handicaps. It is truly amazing to relate to all that they were accomplished by such an august group of founders. A good example is Fred O'Hara who, with a large circle of golfing friends and his wife Ginny, established the original golf club mostly as we know it today. However, what is relevant is that he also was one of a group of founders that built the AV Booth in AB Hall! They were also involved in the Ski Club, Photo Club and many more community activities at the same time like so many of their other fellow founders. There were many experimentations and perturbations during the early stages that, for instance, took the Ladies Golf Club to Hawaii for over a week playing on numerous courses! During a recent personal interview with Doris Reid (101) and Ginny O'Hara, they related some interesting snippets such as the following: • Our village originally only had a nine hole golf course; golfers were given a pass to play golf on the nearby Shadowridge golf course until the full 18 holes were up and running here at home; • The Touring Amateurs were originally called "Doris's Rovers." In 1986, Doris became the original Chair of the new golfing group. Dave and Barbara Demarest took over in 2006, retiring in 2019; • Ginny and Fred O'Hara were the first two golfers to tee off during the OHGC opening ceremonies of the OHGC golf course; • Fred O'Hara originally did all of the handicapping the old- fashioned way: by hand! There is so much more that could be said about the influence by many of the founders on our beautiful community, as well as ongoing active residents who continue this tradition of volunteerism to the benefit of all homeowners. THANKS TO ONE AND ALL! The Swim Clinic starts Sat., June 8, through July 13, from 9:30 until 10:30 am. The pool will be reserved for one hour during this time. This is a great opportunity to learn to breathe properly and perfect your stroke(s). Gain personal strength, confidence in the water and develop a workout plan. Swimmers of all levels are invited to participate. Goggles are required! They can be purchased at any of our local sporting goods stores. Another good source for swim gear is swimoutlet.com. We recommend short training fins such as: Finis Zoomers for about $30. Sporti has a similar product for under $20. I like the Aqua Sphere Alpha Fins for enhanced body rotation. The Swim Clinic has fins in many sizes and can loan you a pair for starters. Many swimmers are also benefiting from training with a snorkel. Try a Finis center mount snorkel for less drag and perfect balance. Do not forget sunscreen! The Swim Clinic is free for Club Members. Dues are $10 and can be left at the Clubhouse front desk. To sign up contact Robin Ryan, Sue Tanner, Ken Krueger or ohccswimclub@gmail.com. The "Caribbean Splash Party" is June 20, from 5 until 8:30 pm on the Lanai. Music by Irie Earth Steel Drum Band. The price is $28 per person. Make your check payable to the Swim & Wellness Club and drop it off at the Clubhouse front desk by June 15. Please indicate the number of people in your party and whom you would like to sit with. Invite your friends and family! Money Hat raffle tickets will sold during party. The menu includes mixed green salad with assorted dressings, pork medallions w/ pineapple orange sauce, Caribbean chicken (char grilled) w/ papaya mango sauce, green beans almandine, glazed carrots, coconut rice, assorted breads basket, and rum cake. Yum yum… The Swim & Wellness Club continues to enjoy a vibrant Lecture Series under the direction of Joanne Greene and Sharon Fineberg. Thank you to Lai Mei Strauss for her diligence in facilitating the Kaiser Permanente luncheon and lecture on Dermatology and skin changes. Lynne Condé, BSN, MSN, PHN delighted us with her presentation: "Eating for a Healthier New You" at the April meeting. She offers a very well respected nutritional lecture series. We look forward to seeing more of Lynne. See you at the pool rain or shine! Golf Club Doris Reid OHGC Touring Amateurs Founder and Chair, 1986-2006
