20 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | MAY 2019 Chair Yoga This class meets twice weekly, on Monday and Thursday in the Aerobics Room, starting at 10:15 am. The group follows along with a video and, while seated, performs slow relaxing stretches for the entire body. Don't be fooled by the fact that everyone is sitting down. The class provides a surprisingly thorough stretching workout. The group assures me that if I continue, I will regain the hip mobility lost through arthritis and hip replacement surgery. Member Cookie Mathes says, "Chair Yoga is a great alternative for people who can't do Pilates or regular yoga." East Meets West – Exercise at Your Level By Sherrie Chaparro, Resident Balance Taught by Robert Hanneman, this class meets in the Ballroom, on Tuesday and Thursday, 9 – 10 am. The class uses Chi Gong principles, which involve repetitive, coordinated and slow movements with a focus on breathing. The goal is increased flexibility, rather than strength training. These exercises increase body awareness to assist with your everyday activities, like putting on your socks, rising from a chair without assistance and walking without falling. You know, all those things you do without thinking, until one day you can't. Contact Robert Hanneman (robert.hanneman27@gmail.com) for more information. Tai Chi Led by Tim Jahns, this class is a progressive program featuring low- impact movements and exercises based on traditional Tai Chi principles. It involves a combination of warm-ups, practice in the Tai Chi form, Chi Gong exercises, and occasional two-person practice to increase sensitivity to body mechanics and energy. The form is a traditional sequence of movements (108 in the form practiced here) developed for both health and martial arts application. I wish I could provide a video instead of a still photo, since it is lovely and very calming to watch the group go through their movements. Because the class builds various skills over time, it currently consists only of students who have been attending regularly for some time. A new class for beginners might be offered in the near future. If you are interested in a new class, contact Tim Jahns at (951) 305-6556.
