Amateur Radio Club The Emergency Preparedness Program Expo in January was a tremendous success. The estimated attendance was over 300 with approximately 18 to 20 display tables and/or vendor tables. These displays covered a full gamut of emergency preparedness and survival information necessary to help our community evaluate situations and take the required first steps in securing our community until the proper authorities respond. There were also many organizations which offered presentations or demonstrations highlighting their area of expertise such as the rescue dogs, EMT services, fire 34 response and rescue personnel and the Beaumont Police Department. The Amateur Radio Club displayed examples of FRS (Family Radio System = Walkie-Talkie) and Ham Radio Equipment, both of which will be used here during any emergencies. The team participates in weekly radio checks, protocols and instruction in honing our skills to better serve the community in the event of an actual emergency. We are always eager to share our skills with interested persons and as such we had eight people who attended the Expo express interest in attending our meetings, one individual attended our FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2013 | clubs & Groups January meeting and hopefully will join the club soon. Our members also have the opportunity to participate with the Sun Lakes Radio club and share ideas, new technologies, club activities and special field training exercises at various times during the year. Our meetings are in The Lodge Card Room at 10 am on the last Friday of the month. Everyone is welcome. ~ Bud Peck Discovery Club On March 20, at 1 pm in the Lodge Ballroom, we will have our very first hands-on workshop. All are welcome, and its free. Help is here for the taking, so dont miss this unique opportunity. Heres what its about. You are invited to bring your family history stuff those folders, boxes, envelopes and files full of photos, papers, letters, certificates, licenses and so forth. You know that stuff you got from your parents of which you have become the caretaker. That stuff youve been saving all these years and have done nothing with. No you dont need to sort through it first. If we could speak directly to your stuff wed say, Come as you are! No computers, no complicated forms, no confusing mess to deal with. Well provide one-on-one help so you can take the first steps toward getting your family data and memorabilia organized and identified. You will discover what you really have and demystify it. Youll be able to organize things into logical categories that are easily accessed. Youll start to identify things by dates, places, people and events. And youll take the first and most important steps to putting your family history together. All we ask is that you show your interest by placing your name on the sign-up sheet at the Lodge, and then show up with your stuff at the date and time indicated. Well also have flyers at the Lodge so you can take one as a reminder. Also, at the Workshop youll be given some simple printed forms that you can fill in at your convenience to identify your family members more accurately. This will help you know two things: First, the information you already have, and second, the information you still need to get. There will be other workshops in the future to deal with things like finding missing relatives, doing personal and online research, publishing, correspondence, etc. But these things come after you take the first steps to get your stuff organized. Remember this: If YOU dont do it, who will? Well make it painless and fun, so come and enjoy a productive time doing something youve always wanted to do. Youll be a happy camper!
