Game! Set! Match! Congratulations to Brandi and Bob Elliott and Mary Wilkie and Dave Nethercott for providing such a great culmination to this year's Mixed Doubles 7.0 Championship. Exciting points eventually led to Bob and Brandi winning. Dave and Mary's steady play was overcome by Bob's serves and Brandi's unbelievable "gets." Both teams contributed to this year's crowd-pleasing event. Congratulations are also extended to Lori Hazelton and Tom Whittington for winning the consolation round of play in a tight match against Joyce Close and Jeff Mulqueen. This match, like many others, came down to a 10-point tie breaker third set. The 2019 Mixed Doubles Championship relied upon a 7.0 system that helped to level the playing field and promote increased participation by club members. There were 10 teams that competed this year: CJ Davis and Carl Miller; Tracy and Mike Galongo; Peggy and Dave Huetten; Claudia Martin and Don Monette; Joyce Close and Jeff Mulqueen; Carol Ellis and Daryl Barton; Lori Hazelton and Tom Whittington; Lyn and Jim Ball; Mary Wilkie and Dave Nethercott; and Brandi and Bob Elliott. Club president, Bob Walter, was pleased with the increase in participation this year and the level of play, saying, "It's great to see so many club members coming together to compete. The 7.0 system resulted in lots of surprises and excitement during every match." Leveling the playing field supports competition and participation. Tournament director Phil Hazelton was encouraged by the comments of club members who attended as spectators, saying, "Many who attended this year's event saw new opportunity because of the level playing field and are eager to participate next year." Whether you are in your 70s, 80s, or beyond, everyone can compete. Many thanks are extended to Phil Hazelton for coordinating the Mixed Doubles 7.0 tournament and to Bill Hendra for managing the grill. It was terrific to have food available during the matches on Friday. Everyone is invited to participate in the June 1 clinic (8:30 am) and mixer (9 am). A big thank you to Debbie and Nick Caputo for managing the Saturday mixers through May. Dave Nethercott has volunteered to lead the June 1 mixer. One or more volunteers are needed to provide support beyond June. Please send an email to Bob Walter (crystalwater@dc.rr.com) for more information. A mixer at 5 pm and taco dinner at 6:30 pm are scheduled for June 19. Let's get out there and play tennis! | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2019 | 61 Tennis Table Tennis/Ping Pong WHOOPS!
