FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2019 39 We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am in the RCN Room #3. Newcomers are always welcome, even if you haven't read the book. The Book Club selection for May is The Reckoning by John Grisham. Here is a brief description of the book from Amazon.com: "Pete Banning was Clanton, Mississippi's favorite son — a decorated World War II hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning he rose early, drove into town, and committed a shocking crime. Pete's only statement about it — to the sheriff, to his lawyers, to the judge, to the jury, and to his family — was: "I have nothing to say." He was not afraid of death and was willing to take his motive to the grave. In a major novel unlike anything he has written before, John Grisham takes us on an incredible journey, from the Jim Crow South, to the jungles of the Philippines during World War II; from an insane asylum filled with secrets, to the Clanton courtroom where Pete's defense attorney tries desperately to save him." Please join us when we discuss this book on Tuesday, June 11, at 9:30 am. Steve Cooley will be leading the discussion. For those of you who like to read ahead, our book for July is scheduled to be Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens. Our first monthly screening, on Sunday, June 9, at 6 pm, is the film The Old Man and the Gun (USA 2018, 1 hr. 33 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest's commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession." Our second monthly screening, on Sunday, June 23, at 6 pm, is the film Love After Love (USA 2017, 1 hr. 53 min., English). Here is a brief description from Amazon.com: "What happens when you lose the foundation of your family? In the wake of a husband and father's death, the family members he leaves behind find themselves adrift — and in danger of drifting apart — as they each try to find meaning in a world without the man who held them together. Mother Suzanne (Andie MacDowell) tentatively seeks companionship — but her attempts at dating only drive a wedge between her and older son Nicholas (Chris O'Dowd), whose own relationship with his girlfriend is disintegrating. Meanwhile, younger son Chris (James Adomian) deals with grief in his own complicated — and increasingly worrying — way. What plays out is a beautifully observed, powerfully emotional journey that speaks to the strength of family ties." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early. We hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability.
