| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2019 | 29 Ever heard of a Bloomin' T-shirt? Emma Chung recently led a workshop to create them. Basically a T-shirt with little cutouts that look like flowers. This workshop was followed the next week by Meet the Machines with Sharon Kleven. Everything you always wanted to know about how to use our club sewing machines. If you have not sewn for a while, no worries. Use ours. With just a little instruction, you can do so much. Our machines even thread themselves. Come learn! In June, we will be making decorative pillowcases for the graduating students at San Pasqual Academy. San Pasqual provides a stable, caring home, and a quality education that prepares foster teens for independent living. It is located in Escondido. In another workshop, we will be creating train bags. These are the storage bags that will contain the wooden train sets being built by the Woodchucks. The train sets in their bags will be Christmas gifts for Camp Pendleton children later in the year. Once we review the pattern, we will continue to make them at home through the year. Our regular schedule: You will hear cordial conversation in the Sewing Room on Tuesday evenings and Friday afternoons as we all work on our own projects. Thursday mornings may be open sewing time or special projects. Tuesday afternoons are busy with MaryLu Belisle and the knitters. On the seconnd Saturday, we have a 'Sew-In', and on the fourth Saturday, the Wearable Arts group will be up to something fun with Pam Bechill. A complete list of happenings is on the Bulletin Board in the Sewing Room. If anyone would like to participate in our activities and is unable to get to the Clubhouse, please contact Chris Sanderson at (858) 442- 1834. We have volunteers ready to pick you up! Please visit our website, lovingly updated by Terri Eckhardt. http://ohccsewing.wixsite.com/ohccsewing All are welcome to join us. Dues are $7 per year. The next meeting will be Aug. 1 at 9:30 am in the Ladies Club Room. (There is no meeting in July due to the holiday.) Sewing, Etc. Village Vets The G.I. Bill turns 75 years old this month. This landmark legislation created a way for veterans coming out of the service to help pay for their education, buying homes, and providing business loan programs and expanded medical care. Half of the 16 million WWII veterans used the G.I. Bill for education, as have millions of others used it since then. About 24 million homes have been purchased through VA loans, and more than 100 VA hospitals financed for veteran health care. There are death benefits also. Regardless of when you served in the military, you should contact the Veteran's Administration and review possible benefits that may still be available. At our next general meeting on June 27, the speaker will be our own Anita Simon, playwright and OHCC resident. She will discuss her research into German POW and internment issues in America during WWII. We have been invited to the Pet Lovers annual summer meeting, on Aug. 10. The speaker will be Staff Sergeant Jason Morgan, USAF from Dallas Texas. He was a participant in the Military Paralympics (War Games) and author of the best selling book A Dog Called Hope. Because of the limited space, we will have a sign-up sheet available at our general meeting for those wishing to attend the Pet Lover's meeting in August. Save the date for our Village Vets Holiday Party, Dec. 15, in Abravenal Hall. We are planning to host about 20 active military personnel and spouses.
