| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2019 | 3 President's Message By Tom Murphy I have written today's message as a proud grandfather, on my way to a college graduation at Colorado State. Thank you for joining me as I communicate through the "President's Message." It has been a great treat receiving your comments! This month's message starts with the story of "Building Up Jack." Danny Thomas, the comedian, story teller, and philanthropist, tells of the traveler driving a desert highway. His car passes a service station with a sign stating "last service for 50 miles." Ten miles down the lonely highway he has a blowout and discovers he has no jack. He starts the lonely walk back to the station and his mind starts to wonder about how much it might cost to get the needed jack. At the half way point he thinks to himself that the guy could charge $20 to borrow a jack, and he would have to pay. With three miles to go, his tired mind tells him the station could charge $50 and he would have no choice. Our hero is now 100 yards away and his angst has reached a fever pitch knowing that the guy is going to charge him $100. He races up to the attendant and shouts, "You can take your Jack and shove it!" We all have the tendency to "build up jack." I try to fight this tendency before it ruins my ability to change a tire. Perhaps my quote of the day says it best. Strother Martin's famous line from the movie, Cool Hand Luke, "What we've got here is failure to communicate." As we go about our lives at OHCC, I hope that we can reflect on the many blessings we enjoy, and stay positive. If we feel the pressure and start to "Build Up Jack," — let us talk it out. Communication is a good thing! And now for my report: The Master Board met in Executive Session on Monday, May 13, 2019 to discuss delinquency reviews, personnel, legal opinions, and member disciplinary hearings. The Board took the following actions: • Approved Executive Session minutes from April 15, April 23, and May 7. • Approved a contract with California Elections Company in an amount not to exceed $9,200, including contingencies. • Approved a contract with B&H Photo Video for equipment to enable Skype communications at the Clubhouse at a cost not to exceed $1,500. • Reviewed a contract proposal for the Clubhouse Renovations for Flooring, and tabled the matter for more information to be obtained by staff. • Reviewed CRC Minutes, Personnel Matters, and Legal Matters. At the Master Board Open Meeting, on Thursday, May 16, 2019, the Board took the following actions: • Approved a resolution to record a lien for a delinquent account. • Ratified approval of transfers exceeding $10K from the May 7 Special Meeting. • Approved transfers exceeding $10K for recurring invoices. • Authorized transfers for CD Investments in excess of $10K. • Approved BM Landscaping to mobilize on-site. • Approved, then tabled for the 28-day comment period, new ARC rules relating to ramps. • Approved a Policy for Property Damage Caused by Tree Roots. • Approved a Policy that the Board will not consider reimbursements for resident-purchased items that were not previously approved by the Board. I conclude my message with a reminder that the Master Board Candidate Declaration forms are available. We have an unbelievable community filled with volunteers. A new, fresh energy is needed to continue to solve our many challenges. A few of you are needed to step up and run for the Master Board. To help make that decision easier, your Board, Management and Staff, and the AV Committee are working on a communication system that will allow Board Members to have "Coast to Coast" meeting attendance. Just think, you will be able to serve your community, and still have a life!
