Tennis legend Rod Laver was once described by John Newcomb as personifying the strength of humility. "Win with humility, lose with humility. He handled his fame with such grace." Laver is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport. His reputation was for technical excellence as well as good sportsmanship. Members of our Sun Lakes Tennis Club exhibit the same strength of character that was so characteristic of Laver. For example, lots of good humor, encouragement, and challenge abounded at the recent World Cup tennis event. "I was so glad to hear that the tennis club was going to have another World Cup event," said Linda Jennings, "Participating in this event is always exciting and fun while I am working on improving my game." About two dozen members participated in this team competition between USA and Norway. Everyone, despite their current level of play, found meaningful ways to have fun and compete in the various combinations of doubles matches. "This event was great open-ended fun to move in and out of sets with no pressure," explained Wes McDaniel. Each player took turns on the court, playing about four games of the eight-game set. And just as Laver, everyone handled wins and losses with humility and grace. Everyone enjoyed interacting with each other as much as playing tennis. It is terrific that the Sun Lakes Tennis Club is able to support and strengthen the identity of Sun Lakes Country Club as an active adult community. Everyone can enjoy playing tennis! The World Cup monthly opportunities are planned to continue at least through July. Contact Michele Walter, crystalwater@dc.rr.com if you would like to play in the next World Cup activity. Friday Night Lights is another great way to have fun and play tennis. This mixed doubles event uses an informal approach to pairing teams for competition. Sally Jo Schwartz, sallyjo1955@gmail.com organizes our monthly Friday Night Lights events. The Tennis Club's monthly mixers at 9 am and free skills clinics at 8:30 am are scheduled on the first Saturday of each month, with the next on Sat., July 6. Dave Nethercott, who can be contacted at prairieborn@aol.com, is organizing the July and August mixers. If you would like to volunteer to organize one or more mixers after August, please send an email to Bob Walter at crystalwater@ dc.rr.com. Great things are possible when everyone contributes!
