54 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2019 | Do you enjoy playing the billiard game of 8 Ball? If you do, come join us. All Sun Lakes residents are welcome to practice with us Mondays through Saturdays. We normally draw for partners at noon, then play to around 2 pm. There is no cost to join our group. However, if you elect to join a team, there is a $15 competition fee per three-month season. Eight teams compete every Thursday; four at 9 am and the other four at 1 pm in our Main Clubhouse Billiards Room. For a fun afternoon of friendly competition, come watch us play. For further information, please contact Barry Sorensen at (951) 402-4020 or email jobear15@sbcglobal.net. Winter and spring this year seemed to be unusually cold, damp and rainy. On the days when the weather was not cooperative, we obviously were not able to play. But finally, Hello summer! Beautiful blue skies and warm weather are here to stay for a while. It's a perfect time to get out and enjoy the weather and play some POP paddle tennis. We play on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 8 am. We also play on Sundays at 8 am. Most summers when it gets really hot at 8:30 am or earlier in the mornings, we move our play time to 7:30 am, but please check the bulletin board by the courts for more information. For all of our new members/players, welcome. We love that you are coming out to play and have joined our club. Several of you have inquired about purchasing POP tennis paddles. Jeanne McGuire has all the information and can get them at a discount. We have demo paddles available in a couple of different sizes and grips that you are welcome to use until you decide which will be the best selection for you. See you soon on the courts. If you need more information, call Suzanne at (951) 205-9588 or Jeanne at (951) 845-8817. With the recent controversy over vaccinations, the Pass Area is starting to see a sharp rise in Zombieism. Our group has been formed to help residents prepare for inevitable confrontations. Here are a few tips we review in depth at our weekly meetings: Never underestimate the zombie: They are not mindless hunters. They are far craftier than one might expect and rely on the art of surprise attack. Never engage a zombie: Only stand and fight if you are cornered. If there is an opportunity to run away, take it. Keep calm and breathe through your mouth: It is difficult to prepare for the grotesque appearance and rotting stench of a zombie. It is important not to react with fear or horror as that may cause you to hesitate or even freeze. Focus instead on delivering a combination of defensive and offensive strikes that will buy you time to escape (see The Swipe & Strike Method at right). Watch for red flags: If you are talking to someone and they are deadly dull or hum and drool mid-sentence, you may be talking to a zombie. Don't panic. Discreetly excuse yourself from the conversation. The life you save may be your own. Preparation is so important. Join us Wednesdays at dusk outside the main gate. Pitchforks will be provided for those who do not have their own. We have a fun potluck on the last Wednesday of the month. ~ Jackie Chan Zombie Combat Club THE SWIPE & STRIKE METHOD If a zombie has you cornered or bursts out at you from behind a bush or utility pole, the Swipe & Strike method is your best bet for escape. This decisive move is easy to deliver and focuses the strike on the zombie's nose, impairing its most reliable means of locating prey. SWIPE: Step back and keep your knees bent. Raise your arms and swipe the zombie's arms downward. STRIKE: With an upward thrusting motion, strike the zombie in the nose with the palm of your hand, turning your hips into the blow. Swipe stance
